"From someone who's lived in other places..."

I've lived here 6 months and this is what I've experienced:
From someone who has lived in L.A. and Chicago, in the downtown and suburban parts, Midtown is not what people think it's cracked up to be.
Let's get right down to the heart of the matter: Atlanta is trying to make itself out to be "all that" but it has a loooong way to go. Number one issue is Crime. That's with a capital 'C'. My understanding is that Atlanta got this problem after a lot of less-fortunates ended up stranded here after hurricane Andrew wiped out New Orleans.

Did no one tell you that a man with an ASSAULT RIFLE shot up a MAJOR MIDTOWN STREET right near the FEDERAL frickin' RESERVE along with a number of other gunslinging thugs? Busy night, lots of people around. Hundreds of shots were fired, but no one was ever caught. Ever.

I pay a lot of money per month in rent, and I daily see reports and video on NextDoor of people within just 1 or 2 blocks of me breaking into homes, trying car doors, stealing, looking in people's windows, and firing guns (this happens with amazing frequency, you can hear them at night if you're up at the right hour). I personally had my car windows smashed. I found out later it was a handful of teenagers in a stolen car who had busted the windows on approximately 200(!) vehicles in the span of a few weeks. Right in this area. Were they caught? Even after 2 police chases with them? Nope. Basically, I don't feel safe living here, and I've lived in some pretty sketch places before. Money keeps flowing in, and they want you to think what a nice place this is, but I wouldn't move here if I were you; at least not if you value your personal safety or property.
Oh, and there are homeless people wandering everywhere. *everywhere*. Again, L.A. and Chicago. Lived in'em both. Neither had a problem as large as this... and the city is actually *shutting down* homeless shelters! This city needs to take care of ALL its citizens.

Cost of living is on par or more expensive than L.A., (where I just moved from) which is pretty crazy imo. An anemic salad can run you $15-20 . Utilities are crazy-expensive (we have the most expensive water in the country, the water department is corrupt here).

Traffic is worse than L.A. or Chicago. I'm not exaggerating. The drivers here seem really angry, aggressive, thoughtless, and just downright dangerous. I've actually gotten rid of my car it is so bad. Also, the traffic gridlock is the worst I've experienced anywhere, yet Atlanta isn't investing more money in public transit... there's the Beltline, which rocks, but it's already overcrowded and the city doesn't plan to widen it. They're adding huge condo complexes all over the place too, which is accelerating this place from full to bursting.

Atlanta has some *amazing* food, it's just not here in Midtown. The food here? Don't believe the reviews. I'm a bit of a foodie, and I have friends whose job it is to entertain clients, and there isn't anything particularly good here in Midtown, despite the reviews; There's Oceanaire, but unless you can drop superbucks on seafood for every meal... go somewhere else or just settle for something cheap, like Cookout. At least it doesn't cost $25-$40 per person for a meal that underwhelms...

Ignorance to advancement and solutions is incredible here. Google Fiber? They're having a tough time getting traction here because people are *actually afraid of this whole "fiber" thing*. Electric Bikes (it's really hilly here)? What are those?

Finally, stuff to do: They're knocking down all the fun, interesting stuff and replacing it with condos and chain stores. If that kind of consumerist, thoughtless, beige lifestyle is for you then you'll love it here! Until someone steals the shit out of your hands that you just bought at West Elm or Williams Sonoma or Anthropology.

One final thought (I know it's a lot of negatives, but I've been super let down by this place that is apparently one of the hottest neighborhoods in the country) is that Atlantans don't seem to understand *how* to make this a better city. I ask bikeshops why, if crime is some of the worst in the nation and traffic is so bad, they don't sell folding (prevent theft) electric (deal with all the hills here) bikes. Atlanta seems to be about 2-10 years behind trends and technology, in general.

Good parts? It's green (nice wildlife, criminals notwithstanding), people act friendlier than other places I've lived (though there seems to be an angry/viciouspolitical/ignorant undercurrent to some of that as well), and area is pretty walkable/bikeable.
Cons
  • Break-ins
  • Property theft
  • Gun Violence
  • bad traffic & horrible parking
  • housing can be expensive

sarahl18 Help! You seem like someone who is very thorough, knows a thing or two about Atlanta and will give it to me straight. Where do you recommend someone relocating to the area live? My husband will be working downtown near CNN and we have two little girls (2 and 5 months) --wanted to rent first before I committed to any particular area. We do appreciate the finer things and are fine with city or suburban living, I hear the traffic is bad from everywhere, but above all I just want to be safe. What do you recommend?

davidk10 If money isn't an issue, Morningside or Virginia Highlands have pretty good schools and are fairly safe. If he has odd work hours (to avoid the traffic) or is ok with sitting in traffic, consider living in Decatur; it's a separate city East of Atlanta a few minutes and has good schools, community, and people seem pretty happy there. Kirkwood might be another option, but is getting pricier now that families are moving there.
Perhaps consider Brookhaven as well, it's up-and-coming but I don't know about the schools there.
Thanks for the compliment!

"Gaytown in a sweet sense..."

It is great for gay night out. Bars, restaurants, wherever you look at you see gay couples. My gay friend and I love Piedmont park to relaxe at or the bars and clubs around it. Nobody stares at you in a funny way or makes stupid remarks. If you love the green space, pet friendly area and don't mind the hefty price tag that comes with it, then Midtown is great to live at. You can find many old historic houses and you are in the heart of Atlanta. Many students and families with children live there and a view minutes out you can find the more wealthy residents. The main issue I have with this area is parking. Is almost non-exsisting or comes with a tow or parking boot.

"Flavor and Flair"

The Midtown neighborhood of Atlanta Georgia is a great place to visit and live. It is located off of Interstate highways 75 and 85 off the tenth avenue exit. This area has modern city beautification with the lovely homes priced in the $300k range making the cost of living slightly high. The area offers is fabulous restaurants for dining and a safe public transportation system.

The friendly environment allows families with children of all ages feel comfortable when visiting local parks and playgrounds. Area schools consist of Georgia Institute of Technology, John Marshall Law School, and Savanna College of Art and Design. This variety of education brings promise to the area for divers cultural ethnicity.

Located here is this district is the high rise economic building that bring in a huge revenue to the city. These economic building are the Bank of America Plaza, AT&T Midtown center, and the Atlantic Center just to name a few. Many visitor are fascinated by these tall buildings but frequently visit the High Museum of Art, the Museum of Design Atlanta, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for experiences in art. With all of these features to any community or neighborhood, it can be a thriving asset to any city.

"A tiny slice of New York"

Midtown is like a tiny slice of New York. There is always some type of event going on, sirens blaring and people hustling and bustling about. Having actually lived in Midtown before, I know the pros and cons of this unique neighborhood.

Let’s start with the pros. Midtown is the perfect place location-wise. It is right smack dab in the center of everything. It’s only about 4 miles from downtown Atlanta, as well as Buckhead. It is completely accessible if you are using public transportation; just get off at the Midtown MARTA (train) station. There are plenty of things to do if you are in this area. A few cool places you can check out are the: Fox Theatre, High Museum, Center for Puppetry Arts and the Breman Jewish Museum. Not to mention, there are a plethora of restaurants to explore. The Melting Pot, Vortex, Mu Lan Chinese Restaurant and Mediterranean Grill, are just a few dining options. There is also a really nifty salad bar (Dressed Salads), where you can go to build your own salad any way that you want.

Midtown is home to several popular festivals including: Music Midtown, Atlanta Food & Wine Festival and Pride. This brings much diversity to the area. Many of the residents are young trendy professionals. Cost of living can get a little on the pricey side, but it’s worth it -especially if you are lucky enough to get a skyline view (believe me I’ve experienced it). The only con to living in this area is that the constant traffic can become annoying after a while. I lived close to the Fox Theatre, and every night that there was a show, parking became increasingly difficult to find. On many occasions I had to use paid parking options (which is just awful if you are a resident). Midtown, is great for visitors, but can become a little hectic if you live in the area.

"We're Not in Buckhead Anymore..."

Midtown has, arguably, replaced Buckhead as the arts, shopping, financial, and entertainment center of Atlanta. Though Buckhead is still a popular tourists’ destination for its high-end retailers and fine dining, the community lacks something that makes it accessible and approachable to most of Atlanta’s live-in residents (see: the rest of my Buckhead reviews.)

Midtown, then, has quickly taken its place as a favorite answer to the question, “What is there to do?” Midtown responds with numerous trendy tapas restaurants, shopping options, and – for those looking to appreciate the arts – the High Museum, the Center for Puppetry Arts, and the Fox Theater, to name a few.

The area also has a thriving nightlife scene, as it hosts some of Atlanta’s most popular clubs, including the majority of the city’s gay bars. In fact, Midtown is often considered one of the most gay-friendly areas in the Southeast, and it’s not just because of the large live-in gay population, or the high volume of gay bars, or the frequency of unique little shopping experiences like the Outwrite Bookstore. No – every year in early October something magical happens in Midtown’s Piedmont Park. From the park’s lush, rolling green-space springs a congregation of the city’s gayest – rainbows, restaurants, pierced party-goers, organizations with a gay-rights aim, and even some churches whose message of welcome make it very clear: gay is okay. Capping off the festivities is an epic PRIDE parade. You need to see it to believe it.

Midtown’s diversity may be what keeps it from going the way of Buckhead – a gleaming, hulking, skyscraping, money-sucking relic recalling its glory days only with the popularity of Lenox Mall and some decent fine dining places. Midtown dominates the Atlanta social scene because of its flexibility, approachability, and cultural relevance. It may not be as hip as some of Atlanta’s smaller neighborhoods, but it has a staying power that has managed to transcend the limits of social circles.

Cheers!

"Vibrant part of Atlanta"

Between the urban jungle of Downtown and the high-brow neighborhoods of Buckhead is where) you will find Midtown Atlanta. Centered near 14th and Peachtree Streets, Midtown has a dual identity. It is the center of Atlanta’s business district, and yet is the place many Atlantans call ‘home’. Unlike other U.S. cities you will find a wide mix of residences in Midtown – from high-rise condominiums to traditional antebellum homes just west of Peachtree Street. If you cannot find the home you like here, it may only be that the traffic and noise from the I-75/85 connector does not suit your lifestyle well.

However, if you can overlook these turn-offs, you can be rewarded in so many other ways. The social scene is great – there are wonderful cafes and restaurants and outdoor cafes on or around Peachtree. If you like the outdoors, Piedmont Park provides an in town getaway for joggers and their dogs, picnickers and the occasional Frisbee throwers. My favorite Fall event there is the Atlanta Arts Festival - where hundreds of artisans and merchants showcase their works on the lawns there. And of course all year, one can visit The High Museum, the Atlanta Symphony and the Alliance Theater.

Georgia Tech’s campus also reaches into the Midtown neighborhood giving it the feel of a cosmo, college town. Midtown is a safe place to visit or to live, but my friends tell me that the taxes and costs of utilities can be high.

But otherwise, I recommend Midtown wholeheartedly.

"A young, fun, energetic neighborhood!"

Midtown, Atlanta is a great place to live with lots of great restaurants and shops, minimal crime, and nature. There is a lot to do in the Midtown and surrounding area. The streets are always busy with the hustle and bustle of people. You never feel alone or out of touch in this area. Midtown is a fun place for young professionals and is comprised of a very diverse demographic. There is something for everyone including great parks for families on the weekend or runners in the evening, movie theaters for nights out, and clubs and bars. The diversity of food choices is also vast. There is a restaurant for every specialty within a five minute walk of the center of Midtown. Great shopping is close by at Atlantic Station or Lenox in Buckhead. Overall, Midtown offers something for everyone, young or old!
