What is San Francisco best known for?

What are some of the famous things San Francisco is best known for? What defines San Francisco to the rest of the world (both good and bad!)

I'll kick off this list - have I missed anything?

1. The Bay, arguably the most beautiful in the world.

2. Golden Gate Bridge

3. Alcatraz

4. Earthquakes

5. Lombard Street, the crookedest street in the world

6. Gay and Lesbian community

7. Chinatown

8. Victorian houses – the famous Painted ladies.

9. TransAmerica pyramid building

10. San Francisco 49ers

11. San Francisco Giants
12. Silicon Valley – home to world's biggest technology startups

13. Fog
14. Fishermans Wharf
15. Ghiradelli Chocolate

Good job with the list. I think you just about got it.

I would add:

14. Pyschedelic/hippy rock music/drug scene--mostly history now, but you can still find some die hard burn outs wandering around the city in their worn-out tye-dyes.

15. Berkeley Radicals and Anti-Establishment types (Reagan made his name opposing them and Rush Limbaugh still gets good mileage off of them though the tree sitters of today are hardly Mario Savio and the Free Speech Movement.

Ooooh...great post! Here are a few to add/piggyback on:

- I would say microclimates/cool weather year round go along well with the fog

- Cable cars

- An extraordinary amount of parks for such a bustling city

- Theater (secondary to New York)

- Fisherman's Wharf (cringe-worthy but well-known to the general public)

- Ghiradelli chocolate

- Sourdough bread

- Great seafood (particularly crab)

And of course, being expensive. I do love this city.
