What city is better overall? San Francisco, San Diego, or LA?

I have been to SF and SD once. I want to say San Francisco because I liked it more, but I haven't been there long enough to tell. From what I hear, LA is the best, but I have never been there. HELP

I agree with the comment above. I am a socal native, but lived the last year in SF and now am at a crossroads, inconclusive as to which city i fancy more.

Seems the people in socal are much more open to have a conversation with a stranger than in SF...and i mean a warm conversation, not a rant about the green economy or something (sf, hehe). Anyhew, SF is GORGEOUS, SHE'S A SEXY city, and san diego just year-round looks the same, with little to no artistic flair. It's a desert. Let's not forget that. But the beach, mmm, the beach!

And so i leave with out a direct answer...other than, i guess i'll live in both places the rest of my life...at least until i move to NY ;-)

Being from SF, I have a personal preference for Northern California in general more than So Cal.

Where I think SF beats out the other two is in:

1. Weather--I personally like the foggy rainy weather. (For sun and beach going LA and SD defintiely have us beat.)
2. The Aesthetics of the City--San Francisco is just a far more beautiful city than either SD or especailly LA which just looks like a bunch of buildings seeming to rise out of nowhere. The hills and bridges of SF are just far more attractive.
3. Transportation System--Both LA and SD are total car cultures. You really can't live without a car in LA. With BART, Caltrain and MUNI, you can pretty much get where you want to go.
4. The Culture--I don't mean museums, LA has plenty of those. I mean the focus of the cities. LA is just so into Hollywood and that whole scene that you just get a whole lot of posers there. There are some here too, but I much prefer SF tech nerds to wannabe starlets. I just think that we have more of an intellectual focus than LA does--if that doesn't sound too snobby.
But I'm sure others will totally disagree with this assessment.
