I like visiting Pilsen, but I wouldn't want to live there. There are a fair number of cool art galleries that are definitely worth a look, and I know a handful of artists who love it there, but it's not the safest or cleanest neighborhood, and it's predominantly Mexican, which isn't a bad thing in general, but since I'm not Mexican I don't always feel welcome. Just a feeling.

Pilsen is considered the center of Chicago's Mexican American Community. In this area you can find a wealth of wonderful ethnic restaurants and shops. There is a lot of great art, both street and gallery, and wonderful architecture.
One place you must stop at while in this neighborhood is the National Museum of Mexican Art. It has a permanent collection that traces the skills and history of the people of Mexico from pre-Columbian time to contemporary arts and crafts.
All over the neighborhood you will be struck by the beautiful murals and the colorful storefronts.
Alongside this Mexican area is a small area called the Heart of Chicago which is very Italian. Follow Oakley Avenue south of 24th Street and you will be struck by amazing smells and sounds of Italian cooking. You will have 4 great restaurants to choose from and none of them will disappoint.
The Pilsen neighborhood is a delight for the heart, mind and soul.
