Street Closures for St. Patrick's Day Parade

According to NY1, there will be some streets closed tomorrow for the city's St. Patrick's Day Parade.

The streets closed will be Fifth Avenue from 44th to 86th Streets. The parade is expected to run up the avenue. The staging area will also be closed to traffic – that's 44th to 46th Streets from Vanderbilt Avenue to Sixth Avenue and 47th to 48th Streets from Park Avenue to Sixth Avenue.

If you have to access Central Park by way of the transverse streets, you will be able to.

If you plan to attend the parade, take public transportation, because vehicles will not be allowed in many areas. The Long Island Railroad is adding extra service to accommodate the crowds expected.

For you drinkers, alcohol is prohibited. Police will be out in force to confiscate any alcoholic beverages. They may even arrest those with alcohol.

Man, I love St Patrick's day, but I hate the crowds in this city. Just a bunch of drunken a holes. I mean, more so than myself . . .

That is why I do not bother going to parades. I use to go to them as a kid, but I've grown up since then.

@hhusted I actually went across the Park today and sure enough was held up on my way back because of the parade festivities. Actually a sea of emerald green seem to cover the UES as the St Paddy's revelers in kilts and what not flocked to the area's many Irish bars like Brady's, Ryan's Daughter etc. I suspect more than St Patrick's Day folks were just celebrating the glorious summer like weather.. blissful!

@Uptowngirl: When it involves Irish people, there will always be drunks around. The Irish have an illness and it is called drunkenness. The Irish drink more alcohol than anyone in any other place. Why? That seems to be their culture.

@hhusted I thought it was the Brits who had that distinction. Going to the pub for a pint is a big part of British Culture and we've all heard of those drunken, soccer rowdies.. oh well Britain is close enough to Ireland to share the same culture.

@Uptowngirl: I assume you are right. I just know from studying history that the Irish have it bad. In fact, my girlfriend calls it the Irish Illness.

Haha, my boyfriend is Irish (well, half-Irish, half-English), and I've NEVER seen him drunk. Maybe he should call it the "American Illness" I'm always tipsy around him...

I'm pretty glad I missed that whole day and squirreled up at home getting work done. Who needs to be confronted with a city full of drunk people.

I went out to Dublins and it wasn't too crowded, no one was obnoxious, and I had a great time. I'll admit, there are a lot of idiots out on St Patrick's day, but if you find the right place, it's so much fun. I don't know about the Irish being the problem in the drinking department. That's kind of a sweeping statement. . .

@Ajadedidealist: To have the Irish illness you have to be full Irish, or born from Ireland. I don't believe being mixed counts. As far as your boyfriend goes, are you with him 100% of the time. I'll bet he gets with his buddies and gets drunk when you are not around.

@Everybody: Most of the people in the pubs are not true Irish, but just people who feel like celebrating something. Their lives are not that great so they need something to cheer them up. Drinking with friends is important to those kinds of people. On the other hand, there may be those who are Irish and came to NYC to visit. They were probably in the bars drinking to.
