Restaurant Rec - Moroccan

Hi everyone,

I was just thinking today about some of my favorite restaurants in the city, and I thought I'd recommend one of my absolute favorites - Cafe Mogador, on 8th St between 1st and 2nd Avenues. It's an inexpensive East Village Moroccan with some of the most sumptuous, delicious, tenderest tagines in the city, and excellent baklava to boot! It's slightly family-oriented for the neighborhood, and has a somewhat surprisingly "happening" brunch scene.

Anyone else been?? I recommend it highly!

Nope. Never heard of it until you introduced it. I'm not into eating foreign food. Most foods made from other countries are too spicy or too rich. Those foods bother my stomach. So I eat as bland a diet as possible. I'll eat eggs and pancakes, or I'll try a plain turkey burger with french fries. But most of the time I like fish.

@ajadedidealist I have walked by it but never been .. the only Moroccan that I have been to in the city is L'Orange Bleue in Soho. The food was okayish but the belly dancer was a riot.. all the guys in our group loved her...

A friend of mine liked Kif in Brooklyn - 219 Dekalb Ave - and we've been meaning to go so I can experience it for myself. That could be a nice option, if you don't mind Moroccan Brooklyn style.

Haha. One of my friends is a bellydancer - I take my boyfriend to see her sometimes, but I think I'm more into the show than he is! That's afunny role reversal

@ajadedidealist I've never been either, but of course am willing to try anything once. I'm not too experienced with proper Moroccan dishes, but I know of a great Middle Eastern restaurant with three locations in Brooklyn: http://www.zaytoonsrestaurant.com/ It's really inexpensive and one of the better low priced meals I've had in a while.

Cafe Gitane serves French Moroccan food (242 Mott Street) There isn't a lot in the decor to betray that it's specifically Moroccan but the food is excellent. The Sunday brunch specials are amazing, and not totally expensive, considering you're in Nolita. And of course for Sunday brunch they are always packed.
