New York's best/worse sex scandal?

In honor of Robert Halderman's pleading guilty to trying to blackmail Dave Letterman for sleeping with all of the interns, let's talk New York City sex scandals!

Which one is your favorite? Spitzer? Letterman?

Anyone catch the Tiger Woods Mistress Beauty Pageant? Yes, totally tasteless, I agree. http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2010/03/10/2010-03-10_jamie_jungers_wins_howard_sterns_beauty_pageant_composed_of_tiger_woods_former_m.html

@BroadwayBk I think Eliot Spitzer was the worst.. can't understand how his wife, Silda Spitzerwho is quite an accomplished woman herself has chosen to stand by him and whats with the Eric Massa groping male staffers scandal-http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0310/34146.html? First Spitzer, then Hiram Monserrate's domestic abuse scandal and now Eric Massa and his bizarre antics.. NY politicos have all gone bonkers!

@Uptowngirl: That is what politics is all about. I studied a little of it in college and found that when politicians get elected office, they get swelled heads. They think now they are better than anyone else and are above the law. They think they can screw around and get away with it. Well, I guess those days of getting away with it are over. People are sick of it and the results show.

@uptowngirl I never understand why political wives hardly ever seem to opt for divorce either, especially when they so clearly should, as in this case. And from that Massa article, I love how Rep. Jason Chaffetz compares the scandal to the WWF.

Yeah, Spitzer is all the more hateable because his wife is actually likeable and interesting. Whereas the Letterman thing? It's just yucky. Letterman himself is yucky.

Have you guys been watching "The Good Wife?" It's a new TV show about a political wife in a Spitzer-esque scandal who goes back to work. Stars Julianna Marguiles, and it's very, very good...

@Ajadedidealist: Yes. I saw the show "The Good Wife" once. It was okay. @Uptowngirl: Up-and-coming actors, performers, writers, and anyone else, who want to break into show business will do just about anything to get ahead. And since Letterman was the boss, what he said is what they had to do or else. And they did not want to lose their job, since they were also making connections with others in the film industry.

@uptowngirl Yes, definitely a power thing. But unlike Bill Clinton, who lots of women were dying to bed, Letterman is not at all charming, and even a little creepy. My humble opinion.

I wonder whether politicians cheat more than the average husband, or they just get caught more because they've got the cameras on them 24-7. I imagine actors get plenty more opportunity/temptation. But most politicians do not look like Barack Obama....
  • Reply
DBlack Mar 14, 2010
@ajadeidealist I think they cheat about as much as other men with big egos: actors, politicians, high-flyer businessmen. It's only a problem if their activities hit the news, as in Tiger Woods' case, but I think with most of these guys what they're up to is fairly well known within their private circles.

Are there people out there who don't cheat on each other? Has anyone ever heard of a therapist actually recommending an affair to help spice up a marriage?
  • Reply
uptowngirl Mar 15, 2010
@BroadwayBk don't think anybody but someone like Howard Stern would ever recommend something like that. @NeverSleeps I do think its a little bit of both also when these men get very powerful they seem to think every woman is theirs for the taking don't you think?
  • Reply
hhusted Mar 16, 2010
@BroadwayBK: I can honestly say that I never cheated on any woman I was with. Once I am with the woman, I am faithful and loyal to her. @Uptowngirl: When you are in a position of power, you think you can do anything you want. This includes cheating. In many cases politicians cheat for years. The reason they don't get caught right away is because they do a good job of hiding it. But one day a paparazzi catches them in the act, takes a photo, and sells it to the National Enquirer for a truck load of cash. Then the National Enquirer, or some other local paper sees the photo and gets their reporter to go after the story. And that is when the affair breaks out.

I think the wives stay with their husbands because they have agendas of their own. Whether it's in regards to their kids, their own political aspirations, money, status. . . etc. It seems like a lot of the time that political marriages are contracts. Politicians are groomed pretty early on, and they need a wife who is going to fit the bill, so to speak. David Letterman is disgusting, but he's also very powerful, very very smart and pretty funny. It's not hard to understand why so many girls find that appealing . . . no matter what we think of him.

That's a good point, @Jenmac. Being a politician's wife is a full time job, and often an aspiration in and of itself...perhaps for many women, it's worth the humiliation of infidelity

@NeverSleeps; I was actually going to make a comment about that. I have seen movies on TV where the wife was found cheating on her husband. And when the wife gave her reason, she stated her husband didn't pay any attention to her, or they didn't have a lot of sex, or some other reason. A lot of it had to do with abandonment.

@hhusted true... and I also think the award of $9 million is just notional amount.. dont think the mistress will be able to pay up, anyway she( the mistress) is appealing the judgment.

I think cheating is despicable, but suing really is extreme! Sure, the irrational part of me wants to say "you go girl" but in reality it's a dangerous precedent to set
  • Reply
ajadedidealist Mar 25, 2010
also, as this article points out, the "alienation of affection" law has some decidedly anti-feminist history: "Rosen said that alienation of affection claims evolved from common law under which women were considered the property of their husbands. If another man was accused of stealing his "property," a husband could sue him for damages. Today, both men and women sue under the law. "

I always think that the person who cheated on someone they were married to should be more accountable than the person that they cheated with. I mean, that woman doesn't owe the wife anything. It's not like she forced the husband to do something he wasn't willing to do, and saying that she is responsible for "setting her sights" on a married man is really ridiculous. That guy had a choice whether to cheat or not, and the woman he did it with isn't entirely responsible for that.... Oh, and the $9 million thing is absolutely ridiculous.
  • Reply
hhusted Mar 26, 2010
@BroadwayBK: Well, despite being a man, I do agree with you. The husband had a choice to cheat or not to cheat. He wasn't forced into it. As for the money, I agree that is also an outrageous amount of money.
  • Reply
Uraniumfish Mar 27, 2010
@BroadwayBK Word! Did no one writing that law take into account that the cheating husband is an adult responsible for his own actions? Because, seriously, do we actually believe that husband-stealing hussies exist? It's obviously up to the man to have enough discretion in how he conducts himself. It's rather a sexist view of events, no? For that reason alone the law should be struck off the books.
  • Reply
hhusted Mar 27, 2010
@Uranimfish: That are many laws that are futile and should be stricken from the books. Many of these laws are not enforced anyway. So why bother have them?
  • Reply
BroadwayBK Mar 28, 2010
@Uraniumfish Angelina Jolie seems to wear the crown when it comes to husband stealing hussies - I think a lot of women do look at cheating situations like this and find the woman at fault. But I just think that's somewhat unfair. I personally wouldn't put myself through the agony of sleeping with a married man, but it does take two to tango... So, yeah, sue your husband, because that woman didn't make any promises to you.
  • Reply
JenMac Mar 28, 2010
Or, perhaps the law should be that the affair and the spouse are legally forced to marry each other without right to a divorce. . . .see how appealing it is then. . .

I do hate how the media idolizes Branangelina - maybe I'm old-fashioned, but the infidelity angle (and constant "sticking it" to Jen) is, I think, really rather tacky... @Neversleeps - I think people cheat because they often love their spouses/partners, but also want the thrill of something new, the chance to experience something outside of the rather terrifying part of "this is one person for the rest of my lie." Not excusing that behavior at all - but it doesn't always mean the husband/wife doesnt love their current partner
  • Reply
JenMac Mar 31, 2010
I feel the exact same way about the Brangelina thing. Jennifer Aniston is beautiful is continues to get crucified while she was the only person who didn't do anything wrong. It sucks for all of those kids, but I can't wait to those two go up in flames. If you want something new, have the person put a wig on.

@JenMac I have a feeling she(Angelina) is going to set her sights on Johnny Depp next. He is her co-star in the Tourist and most women find him irresistible. Actually I think I read somewhere that his wife/partner Vanesa Paradis is already anticipating it. Sad if it does happen though...

Yeah, I want Brangelina to break up too. The fact that they're so beatific and saintly is worse, somehow - if they were ragingly hormonal amoral gorgeous people we could love-to-hate them, but their self righteousness is a bit too much. There's NO WAY they weren't sleeping together during Mr. and Mrs. Smith, no matter what they say (or probably are told to say in order to avoid being boycotted, etc) Who knew I was so invested? But how can any woman not root for the Jen figure?

I actually find myself more often on the Angelina side of the Jen vs. Angelina debate, don't know why. Probably goes back to making the husband responsible for breaking up a marriage with infidelity rather than just blaming it all on the tramp who slept with your husband. I wouldn't say that I am a big fan of either women, though. If anything, all of this hoopla has only served to make both richer. @DBlack Jen is definitely not as pretty as Angelina, facially - few are. And Angelina is sort of...exotic looking.
