Getting iced

You guys see this? I've seen it twice and just had it happen to me yesterday. I must be such a 5 year old for thinking something so stupid is so very funny.

So wait, is this actually just a marketing ploy for Smirnoff?

Uhhh... I was at a friend's house yesterday, and we were enjoying an episode of Tosh.O - which seems to have gotten a lot better recently - and one of his roommates came up, handed my friend a Smirnoff Ice, and said, "You've been Iced." He then had to chug the entire thing, as per house custom. Now I know what that was all about. I thought it was beyond dumb when it happened, but now that I know it's an actual trend I have to say I think it is even dumber.

It sounds like somebody in the marketing department at Smirnoff is getting a big, fat bonus this Christmas.

Sure thing @DBlack, didnt know that Smirnoff Ice had 280 calories though.. my cousin used to be addicted to the stuff ...though I could never bring myself to drink the stuff..

Oh, man! That stuff made me so fat Freshman year. I can never, never drink it again. That horrible taste....

I know it's so stupid but it's seriously really funny / fun to Ice someone. The look of "awe man" on their face as they take a knee and chug what is one of the worst drinks ever is hilarious.

@Everybody: It just seems to be another method of getting people hooked on drinking too much alcohol at one time. Don't people have better things to do than to douse themselves with booze.

@hhusted it's a joke.. most people seem to hate Smirnoff Ice so there is not much chance of getting hooked.. being forced to drink it is akin to being forced to drink medicine...

@Uptowngirl: I hear ya. I know what it's like to take medicine. I am under medication now from my surgery. Not exactly a walk in the park. Medicine does have its drawbacks.

Okay, not having had this beverage,I didn't realize it's known as a bad-tasting thing. So how come it didn't got the way of Tab if it tastes so bad?

Is it super-special alcoholic or something?

@JenMac I tend to agree... as long as it isn't me! @Uraniumfish @ajadedidealist It's a starter beverage, for those young enough to not have developed a taste for alcohol. Akin to Mike's Hard Lemonade. I think it's got a reputation for being a chick drink, but I do remember a lot of guys drinking it - back in the day. That and coconut rum.

What marketing genius! Either that or the people on that ad campaign really got lucky... it's hard to tell which.

I think success in marketing is a lot like getting lucky, BroadwayBK.

I think, if I ever get iced, I might just dig my heels in and refuse to chug. I know that might make me uncool forever, but the thought of fulfilling some jackass marketing guy's expected sales revenue just makes me want to take that chance.

I have always taken a staunch no-chugging stance. I am not a frat boy!

I studied marketing in college and understand what the people, who created the marketing slogan and campaign for icing did it for and why? I just don't necessarily agree with it. But that is just me since I am not into alcoholic beverages.

In any case this new marketing slogan seems to be moving the beverage right out of the underage drinkers' demographic and into the aging frat boy demographic. What a fabulous new way to humiliate your 30-year-old male roommates!

I'm with you, Neversleeps. No self respecting man is going to turn down a dare in public. :)

Haha, @Jenmac. I'm a girl with a no-chugging policy myself, but I developed a weakness for "shots" of port at Oxford. Dangerous stuff
