Ecologically correct library opens in time for E Day

The city's newest library opened in Battery Park. I'm kind of dying to go; I love libraries so much.

What do you guys think of the city's library system? Or do you prefer to just purchase your books?

I'm sorry but this just seems weird to me. I mean, of all the things that should be made ecologically correct, we make a library?

I don't think many of the city's libraries have a great selection - the one on 86th between Park and Lex is certainly fine. I prefer to buy books used - most of the books I like tend to be $1-3 (or free on a kindle!) at The Strand, and I do love owning them. Of course, I also use my university library when I want to just read a given book.

@everyone I have never really borrowed a book from the NYPL though I am a member, like ajadedidealist I tend to buy books both new and used ..thpugh I have been to various computing classes at different branches of the NYPL and I think they are absolutely brilliant. I managed to learn several tricks of the trade for using Excel, Access and even Photoshop so I think the NYPL is an invaluable asset in the city.

When I worked for the Ralph Waldo Emerson Institute, the 42nd Street Library, with its academic books in stacks and the gorgeous Rose Reading Room, was an invaluable asset. And it was a lovely, scenic place to go to work in the morning!

So, speaking of ecologically correct, does anyone find it grotesque that if you buy a candy bar in a grocery store or in a Rite Aid, they automatically double bag it? I'm always having to insist they not do that and make it a point to take the thing out of the bags, give back the bags, and then put it in my purse. I know not everyone bothers, though. So much friggin waste in this country!

It is pretty hard to find a good book at the library - often the ones I want to read have been checked out. But for some reason I just love going and being amongst all those plastic covered books... @Uraniumfish I bought something personal at Rite Aid the other day and actually had to ask for it to be double bagged... Obviously their priorities are out of whack.
