Today, the Empire State Building claimed they wanted to honor Mother Teresa's 100th birthday this summer by shining special lights. But, the owner says no.

I don't understand the problem with shining lights for special events. They shine lights for Jewish and Christian events.

Mother Teresa may have been a Catholic, but what she did was more important. She helped those in poverty. And for that she should be respected. I'm not saying worship her. For only God deserves our worship. I simply mean a good respect for someone who did her best to change the world.

@hhusted I read this piece as well, its pretty shabby considering she worked for the good of NYC residents by opening a chapter of the Missionaries of Charity order in the South Bronx and also establishing the first AIDS hospice in Greenwich Village. I don't really associate her with religion but with good works and deeds so can't understand why the building's owner Anthony Malkin classifies her as a religious figure and invokes the builiding's policy of not honoring religious figures .

@Uptowngirl: Because Mother Teresa wore clothes that nuns wore. Plus, she always talked about God to people. So perhaps Anthony Malkin associates her as being part of the Catholic Church. As such, to him she is a religious figure. Who knows for sure.

She may have been a religious figure, but COME ON! It's Mother Theresa! She's worldwide one of the most important humanitarians in the past few decades...

@Ajadedidealist: Exactly. That is why Anthony Malkin should be ordered to shine the lights. Get a court order and force him to do it. Maybe he would then.
