I don't go to playgrounds since I have no kids. However, I do know someone who does have kids and will pass it on.

Thanks, @hhusted! I'm sadly too old to go to playgrounds (well, mostly), but I hope that these places live on - and kids still get to go outdoors and play pretend rather than sitting inside with nintendos et. al.

@ajadedidealist there's another little playground that I am familiar with located at the junction Bleecker, Hudson, West 11th and Bank Streets in the West Village. It has all the usual accouterments like swings etc and seems quite popular with children. Apparently its the historic Bleecker Playground which was established in the 1960's. http://gocitykids.parentsconnect.com/attraction/bleecker-playground-bleecker-hudson-west-11th-and-bank-streets-new-york-ny-10011-us

@ajadedidealist you're so right about outdoor play apparently the growing popularity of electronic games like the Wii etc are now being cited as a reason for growing child obesity rates. I remember when the Wii first came out some years ago I asked my brother if my nephew would like one and he said that his son loved playing outdoors and he wouldn't want to change that. Three years down the line he succumbed to the entreaties of my nephew as he bought him the Wii for his last birthday. Apparently my nephew was feeling left out because everyone he knew had one.

Darn this kid-peer pressure! Just watched as friend's nieces received Barbie dolls for Christmas, and forgot about all their other toys. The family had been avidly avoiding these kinds of stereotyped toys, but the grandmother finally caved in...the girls LOVED it, and meanwhile everyone in the family was rolling their eyes...

I don't mind Barbies - when I was a kid, I had all these weird "collectors'"/historical Barbies - Phantom of the Opera, My Fair Lady, etc. I used to create all sorts of pageants/plays set in Revolutionary France! I think as long as kids can use their imagination, Barbies are great toys - perfect for budding writers/theatre directors. That said, I think Bratz are just devil spawn...

@uptowngirl: I believe you when you state that children as obese. It is an epidemic. I think the reason for that is because they are too sedentary. They sit down in front of their computer screen playing video games, chatting with their friends, or sending and receiving emails. What happened to going out with friends and playing games. What happened to jump rope or hopscotch? This new technology has its pros and cons. It can be a blessing but at the same time it can also be a curse.
