"Nothing exciting, decent location"

The Marble City area features plenty of decent, older homes as well as apartment complexes, but isn't anything all that exciting.

Many of the houses are 50+ years old, with some being over 100 years old. They're typically smaller homes with yards.

However, the Marble City area isn't particularly inviting. First of all, the age of the homes and apartment complexes isn't quite endearing like it is in other regions. It makes the quality of the homes seem questionable.

The apartment complexes are usually populated by college students, given the neighborhood's proximity to the campus, but it lies in an inconvenient area. There is highway access to the north and access to the busy Kingston Pike/Cumberland Ave. to the South, but the neighborhood is tucked a bit too far in to be truly convenient to either road. So traveling to campus can still be a chore.

Furthermore, many students choose this area because of the low rent, but also complain that the quality of the apartment lacks.

The region is generally an eyesore, and several miles west there are comparable apartment complexes and houses for the same price that look nicer and have easier access to restaurants, grocery stores, and gas stations.

"Marble City: Knoxville's Trademark Named Neighborhood"

The Marble City neighborhood is located along a stretch of Sutherland Avenue from Concord Street West to Bearden. During 1911, the area now known as the Marble City neighborhood, which is located between Mechanicsville and Bearden was named. The neighborhood was annexed in 1917 by the city of Knoxville.

The entire city of Knoxville was once proud to be known as 'The Marble City,” but that was been fifty years ago when Knoxville was known as a marble industry with quarries to the east and south. However, by the late 1890s the 'Marble City' title was so popular that many businesses began using it almost in a mockery. All the historical events concerning this were located in the downtown area, but not in the west neighborhood currently known as Marble City. By the 1930s, it was clear when Marble City was mentioned that it concerned the neighborhood and not Knoxville as a whole.

This was originally known as a working man's neighborhood with less than one hundred homes listed. The majority of these homes were associated with the marble industry in one form or another as residents here did not own private cars and felt it was important for them to be within walking distance of their work.

The older homes in here are beautiful as they filled with wonderful architectural design and a rustic feel as many of them date back almost one hundred years. Many of the homes have undergone modernizing renovations. However, the entire area is somewhat secluded compared to other areas in the downtown region with Sutherland Avenue being its main street through and is somewhat less congested than others around it. The area does not offer many restaurants or shops, but is in close enough proximity to offer anything you could desire.

"Great Investments Waiting"

Close to downtown, but not too close, the neighborhood known as Marble City offers a lot, without the large price tag. There are some amazing homes with beautiful architecture. Some have been renovated and some are still awaiting some attention. Not as much traffic as you would think there would be living so close to downtown. Very close to the Knoxville City Greenways, there is a great place for walking, bike riding, and picnicking. The k-12 schools are not known to be the best but are improving. Marble City is close to Pellissippi State Technical School and the University of Tennessee, making this neighborhood great for college students wanting to live off campus, but close to it . The Young Williams Animal Center in on the edge of the neighborhood, a shelter, but also a great place to teach kids about volunteering, and pet care before allowing them to adopt one. Close to the neighborhood is Tyson Park, great for basketball and tennis, and even closer, there is a skate park, which are becoming very popular with children. So, if you want a neighborhood to buy an inexpensive home to fix, close to everything, but not right in the middle of the noise, traffic, and bustle, Marble City is a great choice.

"College Students, this area is for you"

The homes in this area are beautiful. Marble city offers gorgeous homes, wonderful architecture, and a rustic feel. The homes are older, some dating back almost one hundred years. Several of the homes have undergone modernizing renovations. The area is somewhat secluded compared to other areas in the downtown region. Sutherland Ave, the main street through this area is somewhat less congested than others around it. While not having many of restaurants or shops, it is in close enough proximity to offer anything you could desire.

This area offers a lot of homes for retired folks and college students. The cost of living in this area is very affordable, with good public transportation and access to medical facilities. It is in great proximity to UT campus. Some of the homes may appear to be run down, and the shops and streets are not in the best shape, but it offers a home to several people. The schools, aside from UT, may not be considered the best Knoxville has to offer. However, Marble City offers a great secluded area in the downtown region. It is great for retirees, couples aiming for their first home, and of course, college students.
