Is it considered safe for a young Scandinavian girl to live and venture alone in the Harlem area?

Hi all experienced New-Yorkers,

I'm a young scandinavian girl who will be travelling solo to New York in September, staying 4 nights.
When surching for a place to stay, I've found several reasonably priced appartments/hostels in the Harlem area. However, I've read several guest reviews, both positive and negative, first of all related to safety and so on, in this area, especially if you are a young girl out venturing by yourself.
I myself know very little about the life in New York city, and which areas to perhaps try to avoid compared to others, and I must say that reading so many different reviews and experiences, hasn't helped me all that much to figure out where not to live, but made me more unsure...
In general, I'm a confident young girl, who knows whom to avoid and not, though, I still must say that I'm a little bit concerned and more observative about my whereabouts when travelling alone.

So, I was hoping that maybe someone with more experience and familiar with the city, perhaps could give me some helpful advice? :)

Cheers!

https://maps.nyc.gov/crime/ for crime stats. If you are visiting, then you may want to pay attention to areas and neighborhoods you want to visit. Check out subway station locations if you plan to use them...and they are generally the fastest way to get around Manhattan. The slowest and most expensive travel can be taxis going east-west or vice-versa. The closer to midtown, the heavier the traffic. Going too far north can make travel times longer since some trains become locals and make frequent stops. Express trains can make travel times shorter.
