I'm not sure Golden Gate Heights in San Francisco is all that walkable, mainly because is kind of hilly and because grocery stores are not really close enough for making pulbic transportation a convenient option, I think you probably need a car.
I suppose though that if you are young and don't have kids, you might be able to handle the walking.
