It's not an unsafe neighbhorhood but I wouldn't call it safe. It's really dead at night which makes crime a lot easier. And, over toward the water is scary as hell after midnight. I just don't trust neighborhoods that are really quiet after dark in New York. It's creepy and I feel that's always when the bad stuff happens. It's just too lifeless at night down there for it to be safe.
