"Expensive and happening"
Duane is a very Tribeca street in my opinion. It is not too busy but has a lot of bustle because of all of the restaurants, shops, and apartment buildings. It's a very expensive street, and while it doesn't have the charm of a lot of West Village streets, it's a pretty neighborhoody street for Tribeca. This "neighborhood" street, however, is filled with very wealthy neighbors. The price tag to live on this street is pretty severe.
There are a lot of little eateries on Duane, but there are just as many outrageously priced restaurants on this street as well. There's an Italian place called Roc right on the corner of Greenwich that's great, but expensive. There's also a fantastic Japanese place called Rosanjin that is very pricey and a little uppity but worth it, food-wise. There's also City Hall, KG-NY and the Duane street Hotel restaurant to name a few other good but pricey places on this street alone. You really can't go wrong here as far as food goes, but most of it is priced to fit the residents of Duane.
The apartments on this street are out of this world. And, by out of this world I mean massive, gorgeous and up to $100,000 / month in rent. Granted, most are nearly that much, but you're hard pressed to find a one bedroom on this street for less than $4000 / month. I would say it's a great street to live on but you have to be youngish and have a lot of money.

"Good bike lane, slow traffic."
Duane Street is a pleasant stretch of one lane road that runs east-west through Tribeca in Manhattan. It runs the gamut from hardware stores to printers, copiers, and grocers. The Duane Reade chain use this street as half their namesake with nearby Reade filling the other half. Reade also has a nice bike lane to make westward commutes easier for cyclists, as Chambers is usually a mess.
"Living in Tribeca"
Duane Street is a street in Tribeca. It runs from Greenwich St to Centre St. The area around is known for its lofts, award-winning restaurants, quiet streets, and good schools. It is a great place where to live. However, until recently this area was affordable only for the high-paid workers of the Financial District and few others (doctors, bankers, lawyers, etc.).

"The Functional Area"
You might recognize the name of this street from the pharmacies ubiquitous in New York City that utilize the moniker. True to its name, there is a Duane Reade on this street, on various blocks. This street is mostly functional, there are a few hardware and paint stores and the block around Broadway holds many small shops that offer passport photo Ids. This is not such a great place to get them, however, as the proximity to immigration makes merchants hike up their prices. If you really want a passport photo, opt for places further uptown. Duane st is quiet relative to the one surrounding it.
