What apt is best for 50k-60k income professional to live in Chicago?

I'm really new to Chicago and I want to be in a neighborhood that is mostly young professionals. I am looking for an apt that is high rise on the north side, good view of the river, not too far from the loop, walkable to restaurants and fun places, and of course, safe. I have a roommate who is earning 60k-70k, so we will split the rent and utilities. With my income, do you have any good suggestions on which area I should look to live in?

I'd strongly suggest not doing a high rise...wait until you're old like everyone else to hit the gold coast.

If you really want a high rise, Near North (Old Town) and Gold Coast are your best options, but terribly expensive and in my opinion not worth it. You can head more north for a better deal along the coast in uptown and edgewater, but at your age you won't want to be in those areas (not to mention its not amazingly safe).

I'd strongly suggest living in the Lincoln Park/Depaul area near Armitage, or Lakeview near Southport. Great for young people, great for nightlife, parks, shops, transportation, etc. You'll get a nicer and larger apartment as well. My fav apartment was on Dickens and Seminary, and my brother's best apartment out of school was at Addison and Southport. If you like the Hipster late late night scene, be aroudn the 6 corners in wicker park (very expensive. I also really like Andersonville, Ravenswood, and Lincoln Square, but you'll probably like that 27+ more. The young artists and musicians tend to live in Ukraine Village and Lincoln square, great nightlife, just not as good transportation downtown and not as nice apartments (tough awesome rents!)
