Dependent on the day and time you're driving in it can be quite a bit quicker to drive in by car on I-684, but I'd personally go down to Wassaic and take the Metro-North. Yeah, it's a long train ride, but when you're a passenger and able to read or do something constructive with your time it's a heck of a lot easier trip.

You could take Route 22 all the way south to Brewster (Putnam County) where you'll hook up with I-684, but that will take a while. The speed limit for some of the wide-open areas is 55 MPH, but you'll slow down in the villages. An alternate route might be taking Route 44 west and hopping on the Taconic going south, but you're probably not going to save much time, if any.

The closest Metro North station is in Wassaic, not very far south of the Amenia village center, but you have to be looking at at least a 2-hour train ride one-way. The difference between driving it and train-riding it is probably minimal (but in riding the train, you won't have to worry about taking your car into the city where you will absolutely slow down and get stuck in some traffic inevitably).

Well, driving appears to be a little shorter than commuting by train, but not by much, especially in light of possible traffic and potential parking woes once you get into NYC. If you do decide to drive, your best bet would be to take NY-22 S and then I-684 S. Total driving time, without problems of course, is estimated to be 1 hour and 54 minutes.

If you want to take public trans, there is not train station in Amenia, but there is one in nearby Wassaic. You could drive or take a taxi to the Wassaic train station and then catch the Harlem Line to Southeast. At Southeast you will have to transfer to another train which will then bring you into Grand Central Station. The total travel time for that option is approximately 2 hours and 12 minutes.
