Safety on Valencia St for single women?

How safe is it for a single professional woman to live on the Valencia street between Central freeway and McCoppin Street? What are the things that I have to look on while renting an apartment in this area? Is there any gyms around the place, if not which will be the nearest?

I am not that familiar with Spring Valley, but I looked up the location on a crime reporting website and this is what I found out. There have been about 138 crimes reported in the last six months within a one-mile radious of Valencia street. The more worrisome crimes do give me a bit of pause. Here they are:

1 murder (on Decmember 5 just a block away on Spring Street)
1 rape (on Mt. Vernon back in Sept.)
6 assaults (one a child endangerment on Valencia itself)
22 burglaries and robberies

As to gyms, there is a 24-Fitness way up on University in La Mesa, I think.
