Is Rhinebeck more of a farming or commercial community? Are there many central businesses?

This is a good question, as Rhinebeck has definite elements of both. Outside the central village, you can see along Route 9G (or elsewhere) some of the farmland and there are several farm stands still operating in the town. A lot of this land is really nice to see if you're a visitor passing through, by the way. The village, however, is certainly more commercial now. It's an active village with a lot of local businesses, and I've seen it on days where there is quite a bit of activity. For the most part, those businesses are just that, local.
