"For temporary use only: .Don't plan on retiring here"

I have lived in Jennings (just north of the St. Louis City/St. Louis County border) for 8 years now. The municipality is divided into what are known as the 'good' (north of West Florissant Ave.) and 'bad' (south of W. Florissant Ave.)sides of Jennings. The 'good' side has larger ranch-style homes that are well-maintained. The 'bad' side has much smaller houses (1-2 bedrooms) and does not look as nice as it's counterpart. My neighborhood is decent if you're looking to rent a 1-2 bedroom house for no more than $600 a month since there are only a handful of apartment complexes in Jennings. Unfortunately, though, many of those houses are completely run-down due to owner neglect. More than half the neighbors living on my block have either moved or put their houses up for sale within the last 6 months.
I guess it's not all bad. The best part of my neighborhood is that it's just two blocks from Interstate 70. Getting around is no problem in a car, on foot or on the bus. I'm sandwiched between 2 major bus lines, although they run on nearly the same schedule. So if you miss one, you will probably miss the next one too, but you can wait or walk a few blocks to a third bus line.
There are not many places to eat near my home. Though, Roper's Rib's may be the best. It's family owned and they are always very pleasant and the ribs good and hot. I like St. Louis Fish & Chicken too and they are pretty fast. There is also a Rally's, Popeye's and Lee's Chicken and Jon's Chop Suey. But, now that I think of it, there are no sit down restaurants in Jennings.
If retail therapy is your thing, be sure to have a car because you will need to drive way out of the 'hood for anything good. The Buzz Westfall Plaza has a beautiful Target store, though, and a huge Schnuck's Market, Aldi's, Sonic and a few banks and a few other discount stores.
Please be aware that for decades, the Jennings Police Department has had a reputation for racial profiling and for being extremely prejudiced and, over time, not much has changed. Even though most of the residents now are black.
So if you are looking for a quiet residential area with not much drama and even less to do, this may be the place for you. Just don't stay too long. This place just starts feeling cramped after a while.
