"Tranquil, serene, a world away from Santa Fe"
Ojo de La Vaca is an old ghost town that dates back to the 1500s. The ruins are 10 miles down the road. This is also the entrance onto the Glorieta Mesa, yielding a view from the top that only New Mexico can produce. There is a wonderful mixture of pinon and juniper forest mixed with grassland. The arroyos carve deep along the roadside. This is one of the last unspoiled getaways so close to Santa Fe proper.

There is one negative aspect. When the weather fouls the roads, the thick clay mud makes driving very difficult. A truck, or at the very least, an AWD sport utility vehicle, is recommended in this weather. Getting stuck up on the mesa can take hours to correct, and on inclement weather days, it is not unusual to wait five to eight hours before seeing another vehicle. This is from personal experience.
