Why Buy Bread When You Can Make It

As you know the cost of bread is getting more expensive in NYC. Why bother when you can learn to make bread yourself. Former Gourmet food editor Ian Knauer is hosting a workshop this coming Monday, the 8th, where he will cover the basics of creating baguettes, focaccia, and pain epi. You even get to take what you make home.

The workshop is located at The Culinary Loft, 515 Broadway between Broome and Springs Sts. They are located in Suite 5A. You can call them for more information. The number is 212-431-7425. The class isbeing held from 6:30pm to 9pm. The cost of the class is $85.

If there are any cooks out there, this may be good for you. By learning to make bread, you can help save money on your grocery bill.

Another suggestion - buy a breadmaker! I got mine used for fifteen dollars of craigslist, and for less than a dollar a loaf (more like 50 cents) I can have fresh baked bread every morning - I put the ingredients in at night, set the timer, and hey presto! The warm smell of freshly rising bread wafting into my nostrils about the time my alarm clock goes off...

Now there is a great idea. Thanks, ajadedidealist, for the suggestion. I think I'll buy one for my friend so she can use it in her kitchen.

Sigh, the Sullivan Street Bakery closed down. It was the equivalent of all that wonderfulness you've just described, and all that was needed of me was a short walk in the morning. There's nothing like getting your bread fresh-baked.

I'd have to say the opposite... why make bread when you are living in New York City and some wonderful artisan can make it for you?

BroadwayBK and ajdadedidealist make good arguments regarding buying or making bread. I think it is a choice for each person to make. It also depends on how much time the person has to devote to it. If making bread is on your schedule, go for it, if not, get it done by someone else or buy it in the store.
