The Mayor's House in NYC

Did you know that most mayors of NYC lived in one place. This place is known as Gracie Mansion. It is situated at 88th St and East End Ave in Carl Schurz Park. They do offer tours. You can call 212-570-4751 or go to their website at www.historichousetrust.org.

Archibald Gracie built the place in 1799. Later in 1942, Fiorello La Guardia turned it into the official house of the mayor. After it was declared the mayor's house, every mayor lived there except for Bloomberg. I guess he preferred living in his own mansion.

@hhusted Gracie Mansion is in my neck of the woods and you are right Bloomberg doesnt live there( he is the first NYC mayor not to have lived there) but lives in his own town house on E 79th street.

I wonder why he perfers to live in his own town house when he can live in a mansion. Kind of strange for a mayor to do that. The mansion has so much more space. And it was built and redone for the purpose of mayors living there.

Actually, Mr. Bloomberg's private pad is probably a lot more luxurious, considering the money he has...

Lucky guy that gets to choose! Me, I used t go to school right near Gracie Mansion and admire it daily on my walk to the Asphalt Green for sporting practice - it really is wonderful-looking.

By the way, do any of you know if it is often used in film? I can't think of any at the moment, but I imagine it must be, given its lovely look and location.

I wonder if they do a more extensive tour of the place since no one currently lives in it?

I would think, since Mayor Bloomberg does not live there that the place is open to tourist. You can call the place to find out.
