The City and Seniors

I saw an article on the Internet recently about seniors in NYC. The report was actually from a NY paper and told about how seniors are getting left out and are hurting financially more than anyone else.

The article went on to talk about how the city could do more for seniors.

What do you think about this subject? Do you know any seniors who are getting the bad rap from the city? What about others? Do you know of seniors are mistreated by others? Even maybe by their own families? What are your thoughts?

I guess the most famous case in recent times was the one which involved the NYC socialite and heiress Brooke Astor who was mistreated by her own son Anthony D Marshall who siphoned millions of dollars away from his own mother-http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/22/nyregion/22astor.html.

I think the city does make an effort to look after its seniors why you just have to ride a public bus to see how well the bus drivers treat senior citizen passengers. Also most pavements in NYC have a dip to enable smooth passage of wheelchairs and the city does have several albeit private assisted living centers as well. Seniors are also entitled to reduced transport cards and discounted movie tickets in NYC but I guess NYC still has a lot of catching up to do with cities like London where senior citizens ride free on public transport and are entitled to various other discounts and services including the free National Health Service. In fact the local councils in London make it a point to offer their senior citizen resident services like home cleaning and grocery shopping . I don't know if NYC has similair services for its own seniors.
