Tavern on the Green Auction

According to the Huffington Post, the chandeliers and Tiffany stained glass from NYC's famed tavern on the Green are up for sale. In case no one knows this, the famous restaurant closed its doors for good on New Year's Eve. They did so because of financial problems. The restaurant was $8 million dollars in debt.

Other items being auctioned include copper weather vanes, silver candelabras, place settings, chairs and even garden furniture.

So many NYC restaurants both big and small haven't been able to survive the recession- a few which come to mind is Payard the lovely French eatery and bakery( used to love their flour less walnut cookies) which closed its doors in June 2009. For a complete list of recent NYC restaurant closures check out-http://cititour.com/NYC_Restaurants/listings/search_results.php?limit=closed

It is a shame so many restaurants are closing their doors. If the trend continues, this city will be a ghost city with no stores in it at all. Actually, I read somewhere that according to a visionary, by the year 2015, no one would be left in this city, for the cost of living would be so high everyone would leave. I wonder it that is going to happen, considering all the stores that are closing and restaurants closing their doors as well.

What do you think?

I can understand people leaving New York because the cost of living is so high; but this seems to have been the case for years, even before the recession. As I hear Jay-Z saying about the New York population a lot lately, "it's a shame half of y'all won't make it."

And restaurants come and go here as a general rule - the landscape is always changing in New York, and it's unlikely to stop any time soon. Things seem worse than usual, obviously, but there are restaurant openings still going on.... We're not doomed just yet.

@ BroadwayBK Jay-Z's so cool. And so right.

@the others. Yeah I'm not ready to fold up my arms and cry economic blight just because a few shops close. There are lots of places opening and that seems to be the rhythm of the city.

Oh, the Sullivan Street Bakery closed (from your list, uptowngirl). Pity.

@uptowngirl Do you think that the recession has closed more restaurants than would usually close in a year?
