South Street Seaport

I heard from an unreliable source recently that the South Street Seaport was going to close the area for renovations. This included all restuarants. The only part that was going to stay operational was the free IKEA taxi. I admit the area does need an overhaul, as many structures look like they are going to fall down. But closing all stores to do it will deeply affect NYC's economy.

Anyone have any idea about this?

"Deeply affect"? Come on. I think NY City's economy will survive just fine. The seaport is just a drop in the economic bucket and I'm glad they'll at least pretty it up a bit.

I've never been especially impressed with the Seaport or any of the surrounding shops. It's like a giant mall, the kind that can found anywhere in America - they even have their own Abercrombie in the area. No store could be any less New York-ish. The view from the balcony is the only thing I will miss while they renovate.

I second that! Bunch of lame stores and cheesy "disco" type bars with tacky blaring music. Whatever they do to it will be an improvement. The view there is so gorgeous it's a shame they waste it the way they do.
