Schoolyard Farm to Sell Fresh Produce

It looks like students in East Flatbush will have something to do soon. The students at the High School for Public Service in East Flatbush are building a 10,000-square-foot vegetable farm on the campus' front lawn.

The school plans to sell its produce in the neighborhood, where fresh greens are hard to find and obesity rates are high.

I think this is a great idea. Many schools should do this. It teaches kids horticulture and also how to raise crops.

To all, I think teaching kids gardening is a great thing to do. What would happen if one day prices of food got so high only the rich could afford it. My parents grew a large garden when I was growing up, and we made out very well. If I had to live on a farm or place and grow a garden, I could do it.

My parents have a little garden, too. Which is really great - I used to love just going outside and picking fresh food that I knew had no pesticides on it and whatnot, and it's actually amazing how much better everything is fresh out of the ground.

Yes, BroadwayBK, that is how I view gardens. You get the cream of the crop. Everything is freshly picked with no bug spray on it. And when cooked, actually taste better.

Man, we never did something that cool in school.

We never did anything like that in school either. Hmph.

That's so cool! We had a greenhouse at my elementary school on the top floor of this brick town house, which was quite cool, but we never grew anything more complicated than sprouts.

I think I saw a similar story on the Brooklyn news channel one time - must be something big now in NYC schools. Either that or it was a story about the same school?

If gardening is becoming a staple in the education of young New Yorkers, I think that's a great thing.

Agreed, BroadwayBK. It's exactly what city kids need: a little reminding about the basics: dirt, life, growth, and the cycle of the seasons. We forget that too quickly living in the city.

It's a really good thing that schools are doing this, because how many opportunities do New Yorkers really get to dig in the dirt? I mean, no one is going to be setting up a garden in Central Park, let's face it.

More schools are getting greenhouses. We have a unique fundraiser for all schools. You can buy The Greenhouse Kids series of books at a wholesale rate and sell them to students and the community at the regular price. The first mysterious adventure is Dan Delion's Secret and the 2nd is Ghost Walk (to be released in April). Want more info, please contact [email protected]
