Queens Man Pleads Not Guilty

As you may know from hearing it in the news, one of two Queens men was arrested in connection with an alleged terror plot againt NYC. In front of a judge the one suspect pleaded not guilty to charges he received military training from an al-Qaida operative in Pakistan.

The other suspect was arrested Friday morning while driving his taxi in Manhattan. The Afghan-born cab driver pleaded not guilty that he lied to FBI abut visiting Pakistan and Afghanistan to receive training.

Politicians are now getting ready to pass a bill that will keep known terrorists, and anyone who poses a threat to this country from entering. Going by the many threats we have had recently, I am beginning to think that America should consider banning anyone who poses a threat to us.

What do you think? Should America ban those who pose threats to us?

hhusted keeping America isolated and insular and depriving the country of the vibrancy and the vigor that immigrants bring in is not going to solve the problem. Why weren't some US born young men recently apprehended in Pakistan as they were trying to join Al-Qaeda?-http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/12/AR2009121201598.html.
New York City has been known from times immemorial as a 'melting pot' of cultures and ethnicities as the city has always welcomed immigrants and to stop this now would alter the very fabric of the city. That being said the authorities have every right to stop those folks who are known to have terrorist links and whose names feature on 'no fly' and other lists.

@Uptowngirl: I understand what are saying. I agree that NYC has been a "melting pot" of all cultures, nationalities, and ethnic groups. It is true America has to be careful with who they let into the city. There are those who are terrorist and their only plan is destruction and evil. There are also those who come with deadly diseases.

I am not against people coming to this country, but if visiting is going to create problems for those already here, I say stop the influx. My main concern is that the government keep the terrorists out as well as those who can spread dangerous illnesses here.

As for the US born young men who recently tried to join Al-Qaeda, I have no answer for that. I wish I did.

Basically, I want what everyone wants: To be kept safe and free from any situation that can hurt us in some way.

Anyway, I understand and respect your viewpoint, and thank you very much for sharing it. I am very encouraged by your comments.

This is kind of a stupid question, hhusted, and your ideas about banning movement into America seem misplaced and weird.

@uraniumfish, you may think it is misplaced and weird, but should the day come when you get dreadfully sick because someone came from overseas with a deadly virus and you had direct contact with that person, perhaps you'll think twice about that statement.

If you read my post correctly, I did not say to stop all movement into America. I meant to stop only those whose idea is to do us harm, like murder or giving us deadly diseases. Look at the swine flu for example. That was started in Mexico. The Mexican government forbade anyone to leave the country because of the outbreak. But by the time he issued that command, many Mexican's had already left and brought the swine flu with them.

Do you think it is right to allow murders and those carrying deadly illnesses to come into this country? I would like your viewpoint on this considering your response to my post. Thanks.

They can't even give this poor kid a break after all these years:

I have serious reservations about how these so-called terrorists are identified, and these kinds of policies only make it easier to bar people for illegitimate and unjust reasons. Having personally observed how dark-skinned males traveling alone were WAY more harassed by security personnel than anyone else, I would say this is a free card to racists of all kinds to start discriminating in subtle and not so subtle ways.

I want a free society and I feel very strongly about safeguarding ALL freedoms for ALL people, not just the ones I like personally.

@Uraniumfish I totally agree with you - I myself have been a victim of so called racial profiling. The month after I moved to NYC I was flying out alone to London. The TSA agent at the gate had one look at my passport and took me aside after which I was subject to a rigorous pat down and a questioning session. I was so humiliated and upset that I remember calling my husband and telling him that I wanted to go 'home' and not stay in the USA.

Oh my, uptowngirl, I'm sorry to hear what you went through. Also, Uraniumfish, I also have the same ideals as you. I want a world free of racism, hypocracy, and freedom for all. The problem is will we ever get there.
