The pier off Christopher Street is a popular hangout for gay youth, as it's near the local LGBT center and tends to be a meeting-place of sorts, particularly for teenagers/young twenty-somethings that might need a community center as opposed to, say, a trendy bar in the Meatpacking district. The gay scene really takes off on/after sunset; during the day it's more of a family area...
