LeFrak Apartments to Get Rent Hike

For those living in Corona, you guys are going to find the times will get tougher. And this is for thousands of tenants at the rent-stablized apartments. LeFrak City residents are going to be faced with a $65 dollar monthly rent increase. They are doing this because they have installed new elevators in the building and have to recover the costs.

An appeal was filed through state Sen. Hiram Monserrate this week in an effort to block the rate hike. Their reasoning is that the money should come out of the owner's operations account. It is part of renovations and therefore the money should come from the owner out of his capital. It should not be forced on the tenants.

I agree. When an apartment owner has to do any major upgrades to the apartment, the money should come from his account and he should not depend on tenants to pay for it. It is part of maintenance and upkeep.

What you think about it? How do you feel?

$65 isn't small change either. The fact that the tenants weren't even given a say makes this worse - how absolutely unfair to force this on the tenants like that!

Yeah. And to think that is a rent-stablized apartment building. I see a lawsuit coming soon.

@hhusted I agree its really unfair to saddle the tenants with the $65 charge for the elevators the owners should absorb it.

Do you think they'll end up having to pay? Or will it get blocked along the way...|

Don't know, ajadedidealist. I haven't heard anything since reading the report. If I do hear of anything, I'll report it here. If any of you hear of anything, also post it here.
