I don't know about the rest of you, but I get comments from friends and associates who ask me for info about training to use Word. So I referred them to the place in my post above. I was told they would be there. It doesn't hurt to attend, especially since it is free and you can learn a lot about Word, especially since many administrative assistant jobs in this city require the use of Word.

@hhusted I have been to various classes at several NYPLs they are great and a good resource for people who even want to learn programs like Photoshop and the best thing is that they are free.

@hhusted actually a company called the Noble Desktop which is located in Soho offers several classes for courses in web design and e commerce. However in addition to these paid classes they also have a ton of free seminars on web design and other software techniques which are also very informative.

Afraid I'm set, but what a great idea! It could certainly be useful, especially for older people looking to use word processing...

@Uptowngirl: Did you get a lot out of the classes? Were they useful to you? I'm glad you found the ones at the NYPL useful. I am also glad you mentioned Noble Desktop, considering I never heard of them.

@Ajadedidealist: Trust me. Just when you think you know everything about it, something comes up to test you and then you think to yourself, why you didn't get more training to handle it.

@hhusted the classes at the NYPL were very good! I did some classes in advanced Excel and Access since I was trying my hand at being a DBA administrator.. had done courses before but soon realized I don't have the head for stuff like Visual Basic etc.

Strange that they wouldn't teach people how to use the newest version - guess a bankrupting city can't afford to upgrade the software in its libraries? And its a shame because Word 2007 is infinitely better than the version before it.

I was thinking that as well. I didn't know that anyone still used Word 2003. . .

And I know that if you only have Word 2003 and someone using Word 2007 sends you a file, you can't even access that file unless the person using the updated version makes the file compatible to your software. I've had to do this for plenty of clients, though not really much recently. It's a pretty defunct system.

I tend to use OpenOffice, @hhusted (though I have Word 08 on my main computer). I do have some lingering questions about Word (including how I can change the default to "do not add spaces between paragraphs of the same type" and font of Times New Roman 12, neither of which occurs in new document, and always prompting a change), but I always sort of took the Grin and Bear it approach to glitches

Well the free workshop idea is well intentioned enough, but how lame is it that they teach people Word 2003? They're giving away a class that's useless to begin with. Nobody uses Word 2003, why would they unless their computer is more than 7 years old?

@BroadwayBK there are free converters available online at Microsoft.com for this glitch where btw you can even download the beta version of Microsoft Office 2010. The most problem I have with word 2007 is when I have to copy and paste into Wordpress.. have to always first copy and past the document in Notepad and then transfer it to Wordpress or it comes in with all the weird formatting which Wordpress cant seem to handle.

@NeverSleep: I don't think Word 2007 is better. I used both versions and to me, 2007 is worse. And several of my friends and clients tell me the same story. They told me they wish MS would have stayed with 2003. It was easier to use and manage.

@BroadwayBK: Actually, there is a way to take a Word document done in 2003 and have 2007 read it. I do it all the time. You just have to know where the menu is. That's all. The menu is not obvious.

@Ajadedidealist: You stated you wanted to know the following:

"I do have some lingering questions about Word (including how I can change the default to "do not add spaces between paragraphs of the same type" and font of Times New Roman 12)."

I can help you with that. I format documents all the time. I can either post your response here or send it to you privately. Let me know and I'll take care of it for you.

@DBlack: Actually, there are many people who use Word 2003. Many of my clients still use Word 2003. It will be around for another year, according to MS. The reason Word 2007 is not being offered is the difficulty in using it.

I was actually thinking of contacting the NYPL and offering to teach Word 2007 for a small fee.

I don't know anyone who uses Word 2003 anymore. And I've never met anyone who preferred it, either.

The only way for someone with Word 2003 to read a document made with Word 2007 is if the person who created it with Word 2007 makes it accessible to the person with Word 2003. It is a simple process, but annoying to have to do for clients who haven't updated their software. And like I said, I haven't had to do it in quite some time.

Also: Word 2007 can ALWAYS read a Word 2003 document, nothing has to be done on the part of the person with the outdated software.

@uptowngirl I've had the same problem with Wordpress... I just switched to the html-only text entry and then copied and pasted. At least, I think that's what I did...

@BroadwayBK I guess you have to save it as a Word 2003 file? that's an option under Word 2007 isn't it? I think I have used it before..do you know how to make Excel 2007 accessible to someone who works with Office 2003?

@NeverSleeps; In my circle of clients, I have plenty of people who still use Word 2003 on their computer. Just because you don't know of any doesn't mean there are people using it.

I used Word 2003 one time and was sent a document in 2007 version. When opening it, Word 2003 asked for a conversion add-on so it can convert the file. Once I installed the add-on, Word 2003 opened the file with no problem.

@Uptowngirl: When saving the file, click Save As, and a menu will come up. Choose as in previous version. You'll see versions 97 - 2003 show up. Select that and save. The program will save the file in that older version.

For example, if you are working on a document in Word 2007 and wanted to save it in Word 2003 format, you know that Word 2007 saves every document with a .DOCX extension. When saving it in the older format, the extension will then be .DOC.

Excel works the same way but with .XLS extensions.

@hhusted thank's for clarifying that hhusted I have saved a Word2007 file as a Word2003 file but not an Excel2007 so will do so as and when the need arises.

@uptowngirl @hhusted Glad you guys sorted that out. :) I used to have to do that all the time, as I upgraded the software right when it was available and no one else had the new Word.
