Jacket Ads Featuring Obama Remain

Did anyone see the jacket ad on a billboard recently with Obama posing in a weatherproof jacket? Originally it was located at Times Square. The company responsible for the ad moved it to just outside the Midtown Tunnel at Long Island City.

According to the article, the reason it was requested to be taken down was because it was too controversial. The billboard features President Obama wearing a Weatherproof jacket with the tagline "A Leader In Style." The ad was restricted by the White House because of a long-standing policy against using Obama's name and likeness. You can read the entire article by going here:

Do you see anything wrong with the ad? Do you think the government is trying to infringe on this company's right to freedom of expression? What are your thoughts.

I can't say I see anything wrong with having a president who is a leader in style, but perhaps that's just the New Yorker in me talking. I happen to find the whole thing very amusing!

Yeah, I really don't see anything wrong with it either. I think it is just a bunch of politicians overreacting.

The leader of the free world should be afforded a certain kind of respect, and I think it's perfectly legitimate for the White House to object to Obama or the Office of the President being used to sell a friggin' jacket!

Um, yeah you can't just use anyone's likeness to sell your product.

It's probably not kosher for the President to sue people, but if they were using the image of any celeb without permission you'd better believe that's what would happen, as in the case where Woody Allen sued American Apparel for the same thing.

People have to agree to put their face on a product - imagine a world in which anyone could use anyone's image on any brand.

Well everyone is entitled to their opinion about it. We agree to disagree. I can understand if the picture showed Obama doing something illegal or immoral, than the government would have a right to say something, but Obama is just standing there doing nothing but looking at something. There are no racial remarks or anything else.

The last I heard, the company refuses to take it down and the government decided not to press charges, claiming they were simply replying to a policy they have in place. But since the ad does not slander the President, they will not take steps to have the ad forcefully removed. At least not yet.

@everyone considering the President's approval ratings are currently diving the company may want to rethink its advertising policy.

I personally wouldn't appreciate it if a company was attempting to make money by using my image in a way that I hadn't approved and not even paying me for it.

Obviously this company is taking advantage of the fact that it would be in poor taste for a President to take them to court. I don't see them using any other celebrity images - wonder why.

@ BroadwayBK Right, if the White House pursued a lawsuit they would look like overbearing jerks and eat up taxpayers' money. But a lot of celebrities DO take people to court, which I think is only right, and which the law supports.
