Feds to Award $83 Million for New Rail Station

NY1 just posted this story. Senator Charles Schumer announced this morning that the federal government will award more than $83 million in stimulus funding to transform the Farley Post Office on Eight Avenue into a rail station.

What is great about it is that this will create thousands of jobs for New Yorkers and will also develop on Manhattan's West Side.

This will really be a boost for NYC's failing economy.

How come it costs only $83 million to build an entire rail station, but a whole $100 million to build an acquarium in a skyscraper? I'd love to know how these things get tallied.

I believe, DBlack, because when the government is involved, they take shortcuts. This means they pay less to employees and use cheaper materials. That is why they will be forking less than the aquarium project. Plus, from my understanding, the $83 million is only for the first phrase of the project and not the entire thing. I will need to confirm that of course. Stay tuned...

Update: I just found out that the $83 million is only for the first phase of a two-part project. According to Schumer, the first phase will cost about $210 million. So the $83 million will be used to toward paying for the first-phase.

If this is the case, I wonder where they will get the rest of the money? NYC? Albany? I wonder.

In all seriousness, I'm looking forward to more rail access - the better-connected NYC is, rail-wise, the better.

Yep. Better rail access is good, as long as it doesn't come at our expense (higher tolls and MTA rates).
