Earthquake in NYC

Everyone has heard about the earthquake in Haiti. What about NYC. What if an earthquake were to occur here. We did have a very minor one a couple of years ago. But what if we had a major one, as some experts believe we will. Are we prepared as New Yorkers?

How would you react to an earthquake? I assume we are never prepared for an earthquake, but what would you do if the big one did happen? Any thoughts?

I believe before an earthquake we are ripe for a major hurricane according to estimates http://www.nyc.gov/html/oem/html/hazards/storms.shtml- The 311 service already has a brochure which advises New Yorkers how to equip themselves in the event a hurricane does strike NYC .. I know my coop is equipped with a bomb shelter which dates back to war times so I presume in the event of a hurricane we will all gather there but I fear to think what the occupants of the many high rises will do ...

Hey, interesting thoughts. I began this discussion about earthquakes and you added about hurricanes. Actually that is a great idea, because, according to experts, the chances of getting hit by a hurricane is more likely than getting hit by an earthquake. At least I hope that is the case.

Next time you feel the ground rumble, you will know what it is.

As a native Floridian I have to say that I don't really fear a hurricane; I've experienced plenty. They are generally pretty slow moving as well, so if you see a bad one coming it's easy to make a run for it.

Though a bad one may mean disaster for those who have no shelter and can't easily leave....

@uptowngirl Maybe it's just me but I can't seem to get your link to work.

It is always good to prepare for whatever disaster comes. I know it is hard, especially when you don't expect it. But the weather people have been pretty good at predicting the weather lately. Let's hope they are good at forecasting natural disasters like earthquakes.

Yeah, BraodwayBK is right about hurricanes being slow-moving. You know when they're coming and you have a chance to get out. Though a major one in this city? Imagine the damage with all these tall buildings. And it would mean the poorest people who don't have a way to evacuate would get the worst of the suffering.

I doubt earthquakes are a factor here because we're not on any major fault lines.

@uraniumfish, earthquakes are a factor. NYC does lie on a fault line. Seismologist have confirmed that NYC lies right in the middle of a fault line that extends from the lower Hudson River up to and past Yonkers. In fact, about three years ago an earthquake did occur here in NYC. It was a minor one, but did happen. Seismologist did predict, based on historic data, the fault line could move again within the next 5 years, resulting in a major earthquake. Big enough to reach 6.5 or higher on the richter scale. That is a dangerous earthquake.

Or just get some insurance that covers every natural disaster imaginable. Don't let them get you on a technicality....
