Door Buzzers in Apartments

How many of you have door buzzers that actually work most of the time.

I live in a building where the buzzer keeps going out. A repairman comes to fix is and it works for a while then breaks again.

Do you have a buzzer system that works consistently?

My super told me the buzzer does not work well because it is old and needs replacing. The landlord is too cheap to do it though.

@hhusted I live in a doorman building so don't have the buzzer system but have never had a problem when I have visited friends in the city who live in buildings with buzzer systems.

The good thing is that in the age of cell phones, it's not too difficult to call someone to let you in (though it can be inconvenient). In my mother's day, she used to put the key to her flat in a laundry basket, dangle it down, and her boyfriend would nab the key and come upstairs...

@Uptowngirl: Lucky you. I wish I lived in such a building. But of course, if I did, the rent would probably be well over $1000 a month, just for the studio.

@hhusted unfortunately that's true in NYC...believe there is a lady in the building who is trying to rent out her studio @$2000 a month so far she hasn't received any bids...

@Ajdadedidealist: That was an ingenious way for your mother to get people to her apartment. In the really old days, there were apartment buildings with dumb waiters. Tenants would lower the dumb waiter down. The dumb waiter was mainly used to drop off garbage. The super would be down there and would pick up the bags and take them to the trash bin.

Neither of my last two apartments had buzzers that worked. That and doorknobs and locks. Nobody in NY seems to be willing to spend a few dollars on good quality ones.
