Crossing the City to Brooklyn

Manhattan is a large city for sure. It has a lot going for it. But sometime people just want to get out of the city and leave. Many people do not live in the city itself. Many of the millions of people who roam the streets of NYC actually live in the suburbs. One such place is Brooklyn. In order to get to Brooklyn, people have to cross over the Brooklyn Bridge.

The Brooklyn Bridge is one old bridge. It was completed on May 24, 1883. it took 81 years for the bridge to get completed. The whole process started in 1802 when the State Lesgislature considered a bill to build a bridge over the East River. In 1866 the actual construction bill finally passed. Amazing that it took 64 years from consideration of a bill till the bill was passed. Construction finally began for the bridge in January of 1870. After construction ended and opened for the public, the bridge reached a span of 1595 feet.

So the next time you cross over the bridge take a look at it for it is one of the oldest bridges in NYC.

There's a great documentary on the Brooklyn Bridge from PBS. It's really amazing how they began building that bridge during a time when horse and buggy was the main mode of transport....

I did a review of the Brooklyn Bridge. While many of the suspension bridges of the time went the way of the dodo bird, the Brooklyn Bridge really stood the test of time, and with a certain grace and elegance to boot. Also interesting is how the contractor for the steel cables was a crook, and the fact that he substituted sub-standard materials wasn't discovered until after the bridge was built. Even so, the bridge was so well designed that even weaker cables are able to support a load many times greater than the weight of traffic on the bridge on any given day.
