Apartment Smoke Alarms in NYC

I just received a notice this week that all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors must be maintained by the tenants. The landlord is obligated to provide one, but the tenant is responsible for replacing the batteries and maintaining the detector. Such failure to do so could result in fines by the tenant, if a fire broke out and the detector was proven to have been not operating because the batteries were dead, or missing.

Did you get such a notice from your landlord? I think this is a great idea. Keep people updated so they will remember about their smoke and carbon detectors.

Ha! The smoke detector in the hall outside our apartment has been beeping for about a month. I would have taken care of it myself, but the ceiling is REALLY high, and I don't happen to have a ten foot ladder on my hands. If we got that notice, I certainly wasn't informed.
