Apartment Fires in NYC
There was a dangerous apartment fire in Bensonhurst recently. According to authorities, this fire was the result of arson.
Since many apartments are very high in the air, are there fire escape plans established in your building, so in case a fire does break out, you will know what to do?

Come to think of it (scarily), I have no idea. We've got a stairwell as well as elevators, and a fire escape leading into a courtyard, but I've never really thought about what exactly to do before, other than call the doorman on the intercom and start hollering. Thanks for reminding me, @hhusted, it's something we should all know.

There was a fire in Bushwick recently in which someone died because she was afraid to jump out of the window. This is a really sad story because the building shouldn't have been occupied in the first place as it didn't meet building standards. This was another case of likely arson in a building that was known to have connections to drugs. http://bushwickbk.com/2010/01/06/55-harrison-fire-a-preventable-tragedy/#more-3821
I have only two choices in the event of a fire: the fire escape, which is located in the back of our row house building, or exiting from my second story bedroom window at the front of the building. It all depends on where the fire is located as to which route I will be taking.

Yes. Every apartment building must be equipped with a way for people to get out in case of a fire. It is important to know ahead of time what to do in case a fire does break out.

Last apartment I lived in, people left all kinds of things on the fire escape, flowerpots and such. This is majorly, majorly illegal, though the people running the building never did anything about it. Well, once we all got a flyer saying we should take stuff off the fire escapes, but it didn't seem that they tried very hard to enforce it. Scary thought, though: having to flee out of a building for your life.

@Uraniumfish yes its a scary thought having to flee out a building for your life. I have been paranoid about apartment fires for years now and I think the movie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Towering_Inferno which I saw years ago may have something to do with it. Luckily I live on a low floor in my building from where the fire exit is easily accessible.

My super told me the fire escape is used for one purpose, and that is to get out of the apartment in case of fires. It is not to be used for storing anything, unless what is stored does not infringe on the movement of people, who need to use it. When I hung my laundry on the fire escape once, my landlord yelled and told me to not do that. I left it there for a couple of hours. Thankfully it was hot that day so the clothes dried quickly.
