"The Easy Part of Highway 17"
Don't be deceived here - Highway 17, the gateway from Santa Cruz to Silicon Valley, is NOT as smooth of a ride as one may initially assume. This stretch of highway is relatively flat and just begins to wind up into the redwoods before reaching Scotts Valley - but this does not mean it is any easier to drive on. Traffic is far heavier here, as it meets with Highway 1 before turning into Ocean Street. The patterns are such that commuters head out of Santa Cruz in the morning, and head back in in the evening, so plan accordingly
Cell phone reception is fine in the city, and hits several rough patches on Highway 17, although these dead spots do not stand out too much until you get past Scotts Valley (keep in mind that I do have Verizon).
This is not the most fun place to drive, and is certainly not the most desirable to live, but it is a necessity if you ever want to go anywhere.
