"Quaint and beautiful...if you're into that sort of thing"

This long, winding road, which could be renamed "Camp Highway," in my opinion, provides scenic views of the Redwoods of Sonoma County. It is home to many camps and conference centers, and rightfully so, because the idyllic location lends itself quite well to this type of real estate.

Do not drive on this highway if you get carsick, or if you like cell phone reception. The reception is in and out (mostly out, in the town) and the winding roads are not for the faint of stomach. Frequent pulloffs allow for breaks (and for the faster cars to pass you, if you are at all wary of driving windy back roads).

The temperature is deceptively cool in the redwoods, so bring layers. The town of Occidental itself is a small town by definition. Barley and Hops offers a great selection of beers, and the Union, across the street, offers cheap beers. And that is about it. There is no gas station in this town, so be prepared to drive about ten miles to the nearest one.

Overall, this is a cute, quaint neighborhood with a beautiful stretch of redwood highway, but it is not the place to be if you like any kind of vibrant nightlife or activity (or contact with the outside world, for that matter!)
