"Nice Community Close to Columbia River Gorge."

Wilkes is a nice, quiet community located not far from Portland International Airport in East Portland. Unlike other communities near the airport, Wilkes doesn’t suffer from the noise or the industrial type atmosphere that suffer from. Rather, much of this neighborhood remains undeveloped and is actually quite private and secluded.

Most homes here are older and affordable, with many being built in the 1970’s and 1980’s yet newer homes are being constructed giving some neighborhoods that cookie cutter look.

One of the best things about Wilkes is its close proximity to the Columbia River Gorge, one of the top outdoor activity areas in the state. Also nearby is Troutdale a charming town, which also has a nice outlet mall, a McMenamim’s restaurant and entertainment venue.

With easy access to I-215 and I-84, commuting to downtown Portland is fine, but again, traffic during rush hour can add at least 40 minutes to your drive.

"Average Suburban Neighborhood; A Bedroom Community for the Rest of Portland"

While close to both the Portland International Airport and the Columbia River, it's not so close to either that they dominate the landscape of the neighborhood. The major feature of Wilkes is Interstate 84, which turns westward to run through the neighborhood. As a bedroom community for those who work in downtown Portland, Wilkes offers easy access to shopping and dining.

This Northeast Portland neighborhood has less defined borders than most other Portland neighborhoods, so if you're looking at a house or apartment advertised as 'Wilkes', be sure that you know exactly where it falls. According to some, it stretches all of the way to the Columbia River, while others say the cutoff is NE Sandy Blvd. No matter whose definition you follow, Wilkes definitely lies east of I84 and west of the city of Gresham.

Wilkes is a residential area, with homes mainly built in the 1960s and 1970s. This average, older community has quite a few retirees. There don't seem to be too many kids here, though it feels family-friendly. There are several nice parks here, including Wilkes Park. On the downside, the area is known for having a bit higher crime than other parts of Northeast Portland.

"One of the Fastest Growing Parts of Portland"

Wilkes is a neighborhood located in NE Portland just a few blocks away from the river. It is also just west of the Portland International airport, and it is quite close to Gresham. You can find some fairly large homes for reasonable prices considering the size. This residential area tends to be pretty quiet and low-key. It is also possible to find apartments and condos in Wilkes.

The population is estimated at about 8.695. It is interesting to note that this neighborhood is considered to be one of the fastest growing in all of Portland! There have been new additions to the area in recent years including the Wilkes Creek Natural area, which took five years to come to fruition. Before the addition of this area, Wilkes did not have any parks.

However, residents will find that Wilkes is not very walkable- it is far less walkable than most Portland areas. There are few shops and restaurants. So be prepared to jump into your car if you want to go anywhere. Residents might find themselves spending time using the shopping and restaurants that are located right by thte area since that is a fairly substantial commerce area that is right nearby.

  • Near airport
  • Nice homes
