"Restaurant Row"

The furthest point of 46th (at the Hudson) holds the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier / WWII Museum. I've never been because it sounds boring as hell, but if you're into that sort of thing, here it is. The block at 11th is pretty sleepy aside from a couple of apartments, the Salvation Army and a great, dark Irish joint called the Landmark. It's just one of the several great spots on this street. It has been around since the mid-19th century and I love old things so this is one of my favorites.
The block at 10th houses several apartment buildings, a cute little theatre and a playground. The apartment buildings on the north side of the street are the sites of where several bodies were found during the Capeman Murders in the 1950's. The street isn't dangerous anymore but there's definitely creep factor there to me because of the carnage.
Once you cross 9th Avenue, you embark upon restaurant row. There are tons of restaurants on this block to cater to the theatre crowd and a lot of them are actually pretty good though most of them are always pretty crowded. Orso is one of the bigger names on the block, but there's also a great Irish Pub, a couple of good Italian restaurants and my favorite: Bar Centrale. Bar Centrale is in a townhouse and is unmarked. It's hard to find and even harder to get into but I love it. It's beautiful and very old timey and you usually see some sort of celebrity in a dark corner of this tiny place. It's definitely not cheap but it's so worth it. And, because it's not marked, it's virtually tourist free. I love this particular block because it's so lively and there's a lot to do, see and eat. It would be hard to live on because of the crowds but it's really lovely and definitely worth a visit.
I wouldn't mind living on 46th if I had to live on this neighborhood. There's enough to do that it doesn't feel like a part of mditown / Hell's Kitchen street and it has some really beautiful buildings and good food. Not a bad street at all.
