How walkable is the Washington Heights neighborhood in New York City?

Eh, you can definitely get by without a car. But, this is one of the few neighborhoods in Manhattan that it's kind of a pain to not have one. There aren't a lot of nearby conveniences and public transportation is pretty shoddy this far north.
