"A Funky Neighborhood in Transition"

Third Street is located in the heart of Japantown, San Jose. A mixture of multi-unit apartments and single-family homes, it is an area of transition. The longtime Japanese residents are growing old, and several have moved or died in the last few years. As a result, the area is losing its distinctive feel -- but many of the businesses on nearby Jackson Street have a Japanese theme. The business district has so far resisted major chains (Blockbuster Video is the only chain in the area), but a corporate yard is currently planned to be redeveloped into a mix-use complex over the next several years. Japantown hosts 3 major festivals each year. It's about 1 mile from downtown, and only 2 blocks from the light-rail system.
