The Sliver Strand is San Diego's showcase street. On the north end is Hotel Del and on the south end is the town of Imperial Beach. Taking a drive along this road is an absolute must do while in San Diego. San Diego Bay on one side of the road and the Pacific Ocean on the other side of the road with beaches almost all the way. The best sunsets on the west coast!
A great bike path runs along this route also and is always busy. Find kiting, surfers, roller bladers, frisbee dogs and more!

First of all the spelling is wrong...it's Camino Del Rio...only one l in del, a spanish word, not the old english word.
This road parallels Interstate 8 for a ways then curves off to the south. Drivers use this as a quick cut to other areas of San Diego so be careful, they drive 15 to 20 MPH over the speed limit. There are several medical offices along the road as are insurance companies. Best access is via Texas Street.
The San Diego Chargers main offices are also located on this road. There is parking on both sides of the street and one of San Diego's best seafood restaurants is here also.

It's all about the view! Houses on the north side of the street have the perfect San Diego Bay view. A very expensive neighborhood, but the homes are well kept and the people are very nice. There are several small bayside parks along the road to enjoy picnics on the weekend and watch the sailboat races. There is also a bike lane along the length of the street. Morning rush hour will find this street busy as it is an access point for the Naval Air Station.

White Road is located on Point Loma Naval Facility. It is a side access road which runs up and down the ridge line of the point. At the bottom of the hill there is a small Navy Exchange Mini Mart which carries all the necessities. Just up from the Mini Mart is the Officers Club which serves excellent lunch specials. At the top of the ridge are small parking areas for several of the buildings on Sylvester Road. Usually these spaces are reserved but there are occasional open parking spots.
The road is tree covered and the hill is very steep.

San Diego Naval Base is divided into 2 sides, the dry side and the wet side. Cummings Road is the main route on the Wet side of the base. It runs the length of the base and you can access any of the base facilities from this road.
On the northern end of the road repairs are needed as the installation of fiber optic lines disturbed a good portion of the road. The south end of the road is is great shape and widens out to 4 lanes for a good portion of its length.

Zoo PLace is a short little street that permits access to the San Diego Zoo without having to drive through downtown, or getting lost in the twists and turns from the regular freeway access.
Take the Pershing street exit and turn onto Florida Drive then onto Zoo PLace and Bam you're at the zoo!
This road takes you from the bottom of the Balboa Park Canyon to the top. Watch for runners and cyclists especially while stopped at the light as they may sneak up on your blind spot.

Senn is the profile street for San Diego Naval Base. Most of the large shore commands and special ships are located on this road. The foreign navy visiting ships will berth at the pier facilities located here. There is access to 3 food outlets here and ample parking. The Base Movie theater is also located here. Coast Guard vessels will berth at these facilities during thier training cycles also.
The road itself is maintained well, but there are some large bumps in the road. The speed limit is 25 MPH so the bumps are not all that bad.

If you need to get to the central part of San Diego from US 15, Pershing Drive is a great way to do it. The road is well constructed and traffic flows very smoothly even during peak hours. There is not much in the way of stores or anything else on this road. It follows the canyon of Balboa Park so the drive is rather scenic.
This is also the best access to Balboa Park, cutting off most traffic from the downtown access. Just take Florida Drive and follow it up to the 2nd street light and you are in the center of the park.

32nd Street is the main axis road for entrance to the US Naval Base located in San Diego. Within 2 miles of the base there is a prolific amount of fast food restaurants. El Polo Loco, Burger King, Del Taco just to name a few. There are street lights every block and the traffic during lunch time can be nerve racking. Do not try to take a left turn from this street from 11 AM to 1 PM as the oncoming traffic is too heavy.
Further away from the Naval base are small car repair facilities then residential areas of small homes. Neighborhoods are predominently Hispanic.

Southeast of 8th Avenue Harbor Drive changes considerably. The area becomes industrial, there are many shipyards and manufacturing plants. The road has potholes which are large enough to break your suspension (I've had to replace motor mounts because of this road). This is not a good area to be at night as gang action and drug deals are a constant problem. Traffic early in the morning starting at 05:30 is heavy and continues throughout the day until after 6PM. Then it dies down to almost nothing.
