"Marshall Avenue, not quite a place for the Family!"

I lived in half a house I rented on Marshall Avenue in college. For that time in my life it was perfect. It is a busy street near lots of shopping, and in the middle of the downtowns. I could hop on a bus or call a taxi and get anywhere and quickly. However now with a family and pets I would not want to live on such a busy street too close to bad neighborhoods.

Marshall Avenue in St. Paul is Lake Street in Minneapoils, you cross the river and the name of the street changes. Marshall runs just south of I94 all the way to downtown St. Paul. It intersects some nicer streets and is a good alternative to the freeway especially during rushhour, making it not so great for residents.

There isn't much for resturants, stores or nightlife, but Izzy's is always a tasty treat in the summer for icecream, and stores and resturants aren't too far away.

"Duluth Street definately not the city of Duluth"

I live one block off of Duluth Street, I am sure glad I don't live on Duluth Street. My husband also grew up in this neighborhood and was able to ride his bike up and down all over, well that was 25 years ago, my have things changed. The other day we were driving home and counted at least 8 foreclosed houses along the street. It is so sad how a neighborhood can fall apart.

So if you want a cheap 90 yearold house look on Duluth on the East Side of St. Paul. There is a park at Duluth and Case, where I would not send my child alone, but it does look like they have tried to make efforts to clean up the neighborhood, planting a childrens garden and painting.

Duluth is also near the county compost sight which is handy for lawn clippings and such, though many people on Duluth don't think it is necessary to cut their lawns.

Oh the joys of the East Side!

"Little and lovely Ludlow"

My Aund lives and has lived on Ludlow Avenue in St. Paul my whole life and then some. It is an absolutely amazing little pocket of St. Paul. The houses are all Victorian and beautiful. The people of this neighborhood really take pride in their houses, gardens, and streets.

The elementary school is only 2 blocks away and the children walk with no problems. The location to the University of Minnesota St. Paul campus is just a few minutes, and a short walk. It is actually closer to downtown Minneapolis than St. Paul but has the small town characteristics of big city living.

The only real down fall for Ludlow is the railroad tracks which are just noisy a few times per day and the lack of expansion, which really isn't too much of a down fall!

"Via Snelling Avenue you can catch all of St. Paul"

Snelling Avenue really is a great view of all the diversity of St. Paul. You can go from the airport, almost, to the fair grounds, the como zoo to Macalaster College.

Snelling is always bustling with cars, busses, and pedestrians. If you are in a hurry Snelling is not the best route to take.

There are many stores along Snelling, small shops around the Grand/Selby areas and larger ones near Har Mar Mall and in the Midway.

There are some homes along Snelling Avenue, I would not want to live on such a busy street but the homes the further south you travel are the nicer ones to be had.

"Johnson Parkway a way out of the East Side!"

Johnson Parkway is 2 blocks from the street I live on. It ends or begins at Lake Phalen, which is a lovely lake to jog around, as long as you do so during the daylight hours! Johnson Parkway is a tree lined parkway, that is generally pretty busy.

The houses on it are older and not the best kept houses, with no street parking in front. I would not want to raise my family on Johnson Parkway, it is far too busy especially at night.

There is a Super America gas station on Johnson Parkway which always has a St. Paul cop hanging out at it. I also have seen many pitbulls not muzzled but generally leashed up and down the parkway.

Johnson Parkway is a good way to get to I94 as it doesn't have nearly as many lights as White Bear Ave or McKnight.

"Maryland Avenue....definately not East coast as its name sounds!"

I live near Maryland Avenue, and am so happy I don't live ON Maryland Avenue. There are always unmarked squad cars awaiting, or police cars, ambulances, or fire trucks screetching down the street, sirens a blaring! It is a rough street, many times a year it is shut down because of a police raid, or search, so much fun being in the east side!

However there are several parks along Maryland Avenue in St. Paul and at least one lake that I know of, Lake Phalen.

There are several newer developments along Maryland including several new stores and stores in the process of being built. There is just about every fast food resturant you can think of located on Maryland as well as several smaller hole in the wall type resturants!

"Iglehart....quaint and quiet...lovely really!"

My Grandfather lives on Iglehart in Merriam Park, his street is quiet and the houses are gorgeous. Most of the houses are at least 100 years old, large, some are old mansions that are broken up internally into apartments, but that hasn't negatively affected the street. I love all the families, well kept yards and dogs barking of this completely residential street. Located near I94 and in close proximity to shopping areas, and resturants, almost exactly in the middle of downtown Saint Paul and downtown Minneapolis.

"The hustle and bustle of city life, University Avenue"

University Avenue in Saint Paul is always busy, full of movement, cars and pedestrians alike. There are plenty of stores to visit, large ones like Target to smaller family owned shops. There is a variety of ethnicities on University Avenue, Asian Resturants, African Resturants, American Resturants the diversity is quite interesting. I however do NOT recommend walking alone, or anytime at night or after dark whatever time of day. The police are always patrolling University Avenue but the crime happens anyways. I wouldn't recommend living on University Avenue, but people watching and daytime errands are pretty safe!

"The Lovely Roblyn Avenue"

Roblyn Avenue is located just off of I94, which does make it noisy with all the traffic of the busy interstate, however you get used to the noise. Merriam Park is lovely and runs through Roblyn Avenue, always with lots of children and people walking their dogs, it warms up the neighborhood. Roblyn Avenue is purely residential with older houses and many families, but close enough to commercial areas with public transportation always available.

"Life on Lane Place"

I currently live on Lane Place in the East Side of Saint Paul. Located in the not so great Phalen Lake neighborhood off of Maryland Avenue, the East Side can be rough. Lane Place is a street that is one block long and not a through street, making it secluded from the rest of the neighborhood, and not prone to much violence. The houses are mostly family owned and well maintained. There are no current foreclosures on Lane Place.
