"From an Adams Point Resident"

I love this neighborhood. It is a wonderfully diverse walking neighborhood right across from the best section of Lake Merritt (in my opinion). It is has great aesthetics--lots of trees and greenery, great classic architecture and it is now a lively neighborhood with a lot of activity going on, but not overly noisy. That said, you also should know that when you read reports about Oakland having the fastest rising rents in the country, Adams Point is one of the parts of Oakland for which that is true. The more popular it becomes, the higher the rents go. Fortunately,Oakland does have some rent control. And, although people walk the streets at all times of night, there is a fair amount of crime. My security building has been broken into several times and bicycles have been stolen out of the garage. My car has been broken into on the street 3 times in 2 years. A neighbor of mine was hit over the head and knocked out when he was carrying a long board (which was stolen) up my street. Another friend of mine had his bike stolen off his car's bike rack while he was in the car. The guys who did it threatened him with physical violence. I walk the streets at all times of the day and night around my neighborhood, but don't be lulled into thinking there is no violent crime. And, the worst drawback of Adams Point, in my opinion, is parking. The vast majority, of the older buildings don't have enough parking for their residents so residents have to park on the street. The City of Oakland uses residents with cars on the street as "cash cows." They don't provide any parking options for residents or parking permits and they ticket vigorously. The lower section of Adams Point nearest the Lake is mostly 2 hour parking only and the City will ticket residents who are parked in front of their own apartment buildings if they are in a 2 hour section (and there are no exemptions or permits). Add to that street sweeping 4 days a month and it gets to be a nightmare. Expect that there will be days that you will drive around 20 min. to a half hour trying to find a spot. Business and popularity are growing in Adams Point, which means there is less and less parking available. And, beware if you are looking to rent here. Managers are often not honest about parking. If they tell you there is "a waiting list" for parking in a building, you might want to ask just how many years it takes for a space to open up.
