The LA earthquake hit yesterday and rocked the city...but no major damage occurred. What happened to you when it hit?
I'd like to hear what everyone thought of it, and if people think there's a big one still to come. I've was in a quake a few years back, scarred the hell out of me. What did you think?
Here is CNN's take on it:

Well I just found this one youtube. It's the footage of Judge Judy when the quake hit. The guys looks so scarred! I don't blame him though.

A few years back I was in LA during a similar size quake - we were in a hotel in Century City on level 20. I remember being awoken to the whole room rocking and I nearly rolled out of bed, and then the noise in the ceiling from the pipes and a/c rattling. I then spent the next 5 hours awake - vividly remember the aftershock - sounded like a low frequency wave coming from a distance (subwoofer levels), that then hits the room and everything starts moving again. Very very scary stuff. And then all the experts on CNN etc - speculating that this could be a precursor to the big one!

Remember that Los Angeles in general has not seen an earthquake larger than 4 since 1999 the region is way overdue we're just buying time at this point.

Felt it here in San Diego, whole building shook. Hopefully it relieved some stress and put 'the big one' off a little!

@ BoozeJunky: i'm guessing that you live (or in the near area) to L.A. ... so if that's the case .. do you and your mates talk about the possibility of the 'big one' ever happening in your time? I thought it was very interesting that you said:
"not seen an earthquake larger than 4 since 1999" and "way overdue (for the next one)"
i wonder if i lived in California, if i'd ever wonder or think about the chance that the big one will strike.
Maybe since i saw the original 'Superman' movie where they dropped a nuke in the Fault, i keep thinking CA will split and move off the mainland :P

I think we just take it for granted that earthquakes happen in California. We had friend sin from out of town and when it happened last week, even though we were an hours drive from the center of the recent 5.6, they freaked out. But we were just like, 'Oh, it's an earthquake." I'm sure when the big one does hit though we'll all be freaking out!
Just an FYI, always keep a pair of shoes/slippers near your bed, a huge number of injuries during earthquakes are to the feet caused by broken glass and such objects.

Peasap: It's interesting you say "oh...it's JUST an earthquake"...After looking at the vid from Judge Judy above , those people were clearly freaking out (although surprisingly in a somewhat orderly fashion).
Weird though because down in Melbourne Australia (my hometown) we don't really have natural disasters like tornadoes or earthquakes so the thought of the ground opening up and swallowing you is terrifying to me...as is the thought of the roof collapsing! I spend ALOT of time time in SF, NY and LA and it never leaves my mind the thought of an earthquake. I guess I've seen too many disaster movies :)

Hey AJ. We do take it for granted, we also get fires although they can be really scary especially when you're town is surrounded. When it really starts shaking do indeed freak out but generally we get a lot of really small quakes. Bed shakes, plates in the cupboard rattle, windows shake then it's gone.
I don't really think about the ground opening up or of California dropping into the ocean although I do know at some point in time there will be a big earthquake.

oh my god im glad someone else is as scarred of earthquakes as me. I've been in SF for the past year or so and while I haven't had a major one just yet, i can't stand the though of being in one. Every time a big truck goes past my place the ground sometimes moves a little and I shit myself. I know im such scardy cat :(

Ive always wondered about new home developments. We were told that our new home was built to "earthquake regulations", so I'm assuming all new homes and buildings have been built to withstand the big one. I'd hate to think some of the $50 million mansions up on Broadway were unable to withstand a quake.

I lived in London for a few years before moving to SF and the one thing that scared me was the earthquakes, it;s something you just have to put in the back of your mind and get on with your life.
