Hi all,
I'm heading over to SF pretty soon and I'm going to be meeting up with some people who haven't been there before. It's been quite a few years since I was last there and was wondering if the restaurants around fishermans wharf were still as good? If so, anyone got any good recommendations? Happy to spend a few extra dollars for a great meal too!
Thanks heaps!

If you want great food close to Fisherman's Wharf, your only choice is Gary Danko, but getting around SF is easy, so don't limit your choices.

I do agree with BHagaeman that there are hundreds of fantastic places to eat in the City, but I disagree that Danko's is the only choice on Fisherman's Wharf. I actually have enjoyed Alioto's several times this past year. I'm really amazed because I always thought of it as a touristy place with mediocre food. But the service is friendly, the food is quite good, it's right in the heart of the Wharf and it's got good views - and it's not too pricy ($$). Also, if you want to get more spendy and walk a little way down to Pier 47, there is Scoma's - you should get reservations there for sure. And since you're in the area, head on up to the Buena Vista for an Irish Coffee - 2765 Hyde St.

I second Bikerrrchik's thought on Scoma's. It's great and far away from those tourists. If parking is an issue, they actually have valet parking.

Without a doubt, Gary Danko, but man it can be expensive. I went to Scomas for seafood many years back and enjoyed it.

If its seafood, there are two "must visits" in SF and neither are on Fisherman's Wharf. The first, upscale choice, is Farallon just off Union Square. The second, casual choice, is Swan's Oyster Depot on Polk St. The best seafood "near" Fisherman's Wharf is Hog Island Oyster in the Ferry Building. There is no reason to eat seafood anywhere near Fisherman's Wharf. There are only two reasons for local or tourist to go to Fisherman's Wharf: irish coffee at Buena Vista and live blues in the middle of the day at Lou's.

Being a San Francisco native I would have to say Scoma's as well. Its all about San Francisco and the Wharf. Don't forget to walk down Columbus in North Beach and have coffee and drinks at the various cafes and bars, if that's your thing. :-)

I was recently at Farallon, while not on Fishermans Pier it is the best in town for seafood by far. And the atmosphere - you walk in and there are cool glass jellyfish hanging from the ceiling, and further back (my favorite part of the restaurant) is an old 1920's style room with huge vaulted brick ceiling. It's definitely the next level up from the likes of Scomas. (It is though more expensive)
